2 Verbos Verb – a part of speech indicating action.
Infinitive – an unchanged verb. In English, it usually includes the word “to:” – to be, to swim, to eat, to live, etc. In Spanish, all infinitives end in either –ar, –er or –ir Ex: to swim = nadar to eat = comer to live = vivir Conjugate – to change the verb from the infinitive to a form that matches the subject (AKA, subject and verb agreement) Subject – the person or thing doing the action Conjugations – the forms of the verb after you conjugate it. Example: to swim – I swim, you swim, he/she/it swims, we swim, they swim

In English, the verb “to be” is irregular. It conjugates like this 1 person 2 or more people 1st person I am We are 2nd person You are You (plural) are 3rd person He/She/It is They are

In Spanish, the verb “ser” means “to be.” It is irregular also. You have to memorize the forms and their meanings. Also, although “usted” is considered 2nd person, it is conjugated in the 3rd person category. 7 El verbo “ser” In English, we need the noun or the subject pronoun in order to understand what the subject of the sentence is. Ejemplo: You are… We are… They are… If we dropped the subject pronouns—you, we and they—we would have no idea who is performing the action of “being.” In Spanish, however, we can sometimes omit the subject pronoun because Spanish is an ending oriented language. From the verb ending alone and from context, listeners will know the subject of the sentence. Ejemplos: Soy de los Estados Unidos. (I am from the United States.) ¿Eres de Panamá? (Are you from Panama?) Somos inteligentes. (We are intelligent.) ¿Sois españoles?(Are all of you Spaniards?) With “es” and “son,” you must mention the subject at least once before dropping the subject or subject pronoun from the sentence. Ejemplos: Ella es una estudiante de Lovinggood. Es simpática y estudiosa Es una amiga buena
