Las clases de Sra. Schwarz Realidades 1 The “To Be” Verbs Ser and Estar

Sra. Schwarz SER Y ESTAR You already know the verb estar. It means “to be.” Ser is another verb in Spanish that means “to be.” Ser is an irregular verb, just like estar, so you must memorize its forms.

Sra. Schwarz SER Y ESTAR There are certain occasions in which you will use ser, and there are other occasions when you will use estar. Let’s review estar first!

Sra. Schwarz ESTAR yo estoy tú estás Ud. él está ella (“it”) nosotros estamos nosotras vosotros estáis vosotras Uds. ellos están ellas (plural “it”)

Sra. Schwarz ESTAR = LOCATION Estar is used to tell location. El libro está en la mesa.  The book is on the table. Yo estoy en España.  I am in Spain. Estamos en los Estados Unidos.  We are in the United States.

Sra. Schwarz ESTAR = CONDITION Estar is used for telling condition. Eduardo está ocupado.  Eduardo is busy. Ana y Luisa están enfermas.  Ana and Luisa are sick.

Sra. Schwarz SER Y ESTAR Now we will see what the verb ser looks like. The forms of ser are entirely irregular and follow no particular pattern. You must memorize the forms of the verb ser!

Sra. Schwarz SER yo soy tú eres Ud. él es ella (“it”) nosotros somos nosotras vosotros sois vosotras Uds. ellos son ellas (plural “it”)

Sra. Schwarz SER = DATE & TIME Ser is used to tell the date and the time.  Son las dos y media.  It is two thirty.  Es el veinte de noviembre.  It is the twentieth of November.

Sra. Schwarz SER = NATIONALITY Ser is used to tell someone’s nationality.  Yo soy americana.  Él es puertorriqueño.  Nosotros somos mexicanos.

Sra. Schwarz SER = FROM WHERE Ser is used to tell where someone or something is from.  Yo soy de los Estados Unidos.  Tú eres de Nicaragua.  Ellas son de Costa Rica.

Sra. Schwarz SER = TO CONNECT Ser is used to connect a noun or a pronoun to another noun or pronoun.  Ricardo es un hombre.  Uvas y fresas son frutas.  Óscar y yo somos estudiantes.

Sra. Schwarz SER = CHARACTERISTICS Ser is used to describe a person’s characteristics.  Rebeca es alta.  Enrique y yo somos guapos.  Ustedes son inteligentes.

Sra. Schwarz ONE MORE RULE… Do not use “un” or “una” with ser when describing someone’s profession.  Yo soy profesora.  Tú eres estudiante.  Él es policía.
