2 Ser vs. Estar: In Spanish- there are two verbs that both mean to be that is Ser & Estar. The difference is that SER refers to things that are permanent and ESTAR refers to things that are temporary. To help know which verb to use, remember these phrases: For Ser use D.O.C.T.O.R For Estar use P.L.A.C.E

4 Ser: (to be) In English we know the forms of the verb "to be" without thinking. I am. You are. We are. They are. In Spanish, each verb changes to reflect the subject of the verb. These changes are called conjugations. The following table shows the conjugations of the verb ser in the present tense. 5 Estar: (to be) The verb estar with prepositions to say where some one or something is in relation to someone or something else. Some prepositions are made up of more that one word. The following table shows the conjugations of the verb estar in the present tense.
