LET’S INVESTIGATE: The Scientific Method

The Scientific Method? What’s it all about?

It is the steps someone takes to identify a question, develop a hypothesis, design and carry out steps or procedures to test the hypothesis, write down data, and draw a conclusion.

In other words, it’s a way to solve a problem.

OBSERVE the world around you OBSERVAR el mundo que te rodea

Uses one or more of the 5 senses to gather information. Observations USED FOR CREATING YOUR HYPOTHESIS AND/OR DURING YOUR EXPERIMENT UTILIZADO PARA CREAR TU HIPÓTESIS Y / O DURANTE SU EXPERIMENTO

Find the differences……..

How you interpret something based on prior knowledge/experience Cómo interpreta usted algo basado en el conocimiento / experiencia previa. Inferences USED IN CREATING YOUR CONCLUSION UTILIZADO EN LA CREACIÓN DE CONCLUSIÓN

Here is an example! Observation: The school fire alarm is going off. Possible inferences: –The school is on fire. –We are having a fire drill. –A student pulled the fire alarm.

Observation : – A student is sitting in the main office. Possible inferences????? Inferencias posibles ????? You Try! Copy the following into your notebook

Ask a QUESTION or identify a problem. Haz una PREGUNTA o identificar un problema.

A question to answer or a problem to solve. Questions for experiments…..

Does water boil faster with salt added? Will a plant grow faster inside or outside? Does sugarless gum produce smaller bubbles? Other examples…… Questions for experiments…..

Question: Create a question you would want to research

Question What questions could you investigate about a package of M &Ms?

Question How many M & Ms are in a large bag? Which color is there most of?

Gather information and form a HYPOTHESIS. Recopilar información y formar una HIPOTESIS

A HYPOTHESIS is the same thing as a prediction. Example: I think that the metal items will be the best conductors of electricity.

You need to give a reason If I test several conductors then I will discover metal is the best conductor Si pruebo varios conductores entonces yo descubro metal es el mejor conductor

What are these two finely dressed children investigating? What QUESTION is being asked? What is their HYPOTHESIS?

Question Hypothesis: Create a hypothesis based on your question

Create an EXPERIMENT to test your hypothesis. Crear un EXPERIMENTO para probar su hipótesis.

The next step scientists take is to create and conduct an experiment to test their hypothesise.

I think that the metal items will be the best conductors of electricity because metal is used in wires in my home.

The variable…. A variable is something that is changed Una variable es algo que se ha cambiado The control/constant A constant, or control, is something that does not change Una constante, o control, es algo que no cambia

Controls are NOT being tested Controls are used for COMPARISON CONTROL/CONSTANT Los controles NO se encuentran en evaluación Los controles se utilizan para la COMPARACION.

Independent Variable: the one factor that is changed by the person doing the experiment Dependent Variable: the factor which is measured in the experiment VARIABLES.

Example: I will only change the kind of metal used in my experiment to test which is a better conductor of electricity.

What are these children investigating? What do you think is their variable? How did they make it a fair test?

QuestionHypothesis Experiment Collect Data: What data would you collect??

Data

Draw a CONCLUSION. Sacar una CONCLUSION.

After the experiment, you need to write in detail what happened in your experiment.

Example: What happened? The materials that were made out of metal made the bulb light up brightly. However, the materials that were not made out of metal did not make the bulb light at all.

You need to look back at your HYPOTHESIS and see if you were correct! Your hypothesis does not have to be correct!! Su hipótesis no tiene que Ser correcta !!

Are your results what you predicted? Yes, I thought that metals would be the best conductors of electricity and the results of my experiment proved that this was true.

You need to explain (give reasons why) your hypothesis was right or wrong.

Example: All of the materials that were metal made the bulbs light. All of the materials that weren’t metal did not, except for the pencil lead.

QuestionHypothesis Experiment Collect Data: What data would you collect?? Write your conclusion. Was your hypothesis correct?

Conclusion

Once a scientist completes an experiment, they often repeat it to see if they get the same findings and results.

This is really what we call verification, or checking things out to make sure everything is valid and will happen again and again.

QuestionHypothesis Experiment Collect Data: What data would you collect?? Write your conclusion. Was your hypothesis correct? Can your experiment be duplicated??

Repeat

SHARE your findings. COMPARTIR sus hallazgos

Scientists can learn from each other and often use someone else’s experiences to help them with what they are studying or doing.
