WHO BUILT THE WALL AND WHAT FOR? The leaders of the former German Democratic Republic (East Germany) ordered the building of a wall 166km long and 4m tall to divide the city of Berlin in two. Its official aim: «to protect the inhabitantants of the GDR against the fascist western attacks. However, its real aim was to avoid the escape to freedom of thousands of citizens who didn’t support the comunist regime imposed by the Soviet Union.

CRONOLOGY  WHEN WAS IT BUILT?  13th August  WHEN WAS IT KNOCKED DOWN?  9th November 1989.

MY GRANDMA’S INTERVIEW Do you know when it was built, who did it and why? I don’t know that because, once the event happened, I was interested in it, but most people didn’t know about it here. Did you get a lot of information about this event? No, the truth is that the media didn’t offer a lot of information about it. Did you have any privileged information related to this event? Los líderes de la antigua República Democrática Alemana ordenaron la construcción de una pared de 166km de largo y 4m de altura para dividir la ciudad de Berlín en dos, su objetivo oficial:”proteger a los habitantes de la RDA contra los ataques fascistas occidentales”. Sin embargo el objetivo real era impedir el escape a la libertad de miles de ciudadanos que no estaban conformes con el régimen comunista impuesto por la Unión Soviética.
