2 Descriptions in the past or setting up a scene DESCRIPTION: 1)to set the scene of a story or giving background information → Había/Érase una vez…. → Eran dos personas. Ellos llevaba…. → Once upon a time there was… → There were two people. They were wearing... 2) descriptions in the past → Mi madre era alta y delgada. → My mother was tall and slender.

3 Descriptions for setting up the scene When you are telling a story, you must use the imperfect until something happens and changes the direction of the story. “ It was a beautiful day. There were trees blowing in the wind. My friends were all talking about some homework that we had to do. I kept walking. But then, I suddenly remembered that I had forgotten my homework last night. I had to turn around go home!”

4 More: Once upon a time, there was a magician and a princess. They were in love and lived in Granada. They wanted to get married, but the king wouldn’t let them. However, the magician put a spell on the garden and tricked the king. The princess and magician got married and lived happily ever after.

5 Una vez (haber) tres osos que (vivir) en una casa linda en el bosque: Papá Oso, Mamá Osa, y Bebé Oso. Un día Mamá Osa (hacer) una sopa rica y (poner) tres platos en la mesa. Como (ser) mediodía, todos (sentarse) para comer porque (tener) muchísima hambre.

6 Weather *When there is no specific time referenced. (llovia mucho) It rained a lot. * If there is a time referenced, you must use the preterit. (Llovió mucho ayer = It rained a lot yesterday. *More imperfect Examples: Estaba nublado. = It was cloudy. Hacía mal tiempo para nadar en el mar. = It was bad weather to swim in the ocean.

9 Meaning Changers ● there are certain words that have different meanings in the past as the do in the imperfect. Typically, you want to put these verbs in the imperfect to get the meaning you want. ● These verbs are RARELY conjugated into the past tense.
