 In the previous sentences, you saw words like yo, tú, él, ella, and Ud.  These are called subject pronouns because they replace nouns and are the subject of the sentence.  Yo = I  Tú = you (informal)  Ud. = you (formal)  Él = he  Ella = she ◦ (We will learn the plural subject pronouns later.)

 The subject pronoun determines the form of the verb to use. This is called a conjugation.
