Colonialismo Efectos y resistencia

 And I say that between colonization and civilization there is an infinite distance; that out of all the colonial expeditions that have been undertaken, out of all the colonial statutes that have been drawn up, out of all the memoranda that have been dispatched by all the ministries, there could not come a single human value.

Los siete pilares del colonialismo  Agarrando la tierra  Creciendo para el beneficio de Europa  Desarrollando a Europa  Consumiendo colonialmente  Creando jerarquías  Matando a culturas  Explotando la tierra

Agarrando la tierra  1. Locate the verb, what is its infinitive form, write it in the past tense.  Translate the following sentence. Write down both the Spanish and English translation in your notes.  En la meta colonial, lo más importante fue adquirir recursos y muchas veces adquirir labor.  Things to remember: people lived on the land that was being colonized, the resources and the labor were intended to make the colonizing country and the colonists rich. Small amounts of people control and own large amounts of land and people.

Creciendo para el beneficio de Europa  Cuando los conquistadores llegaron a Latino América, La gente tenia varios tipos de comida pero los españoles no lo querían comer.  The various crops that were found in the Americas were replaced by single crops like: sugar, tobacco, or rubber and were sent to the colonizing country. Consider the environmental and economic ramifications of growing crops this way. 1. Locate the verb, what is it’s infinitive form, write it in the past tense. 2. Translate the following sentence. Write down both the Spanish and English translation in your notes.

Desarrollando a Europa 1. Locate the verb, what is its infinitive form, write it in the past tense. 2. Translate the following sentence. Write down both the Spanish and English translation in your notes.  Todos los minerales y cosecha (crops) producidos en las colonias fueron enviados (sent) a casa.  The riches of Latin America were used to develop Europe and enabled it’s rise as an empire. Latin America and other colonized countries and continents were not seen as independent regions but rather as colonies whose economy was attached to and served the needs of the larger empire.

Consumiendo Colonialmente 1. Locate the verb, what is its infinitive form, write it in the past tense. 2. Translate the following sentence. Write down both the Spanish and English translation in your notes.  Las colonias tenían que comprar productos de la “madre tierra”.  The colonies were not just meant to provide raw materials to enrich the colonizing country but they also were asked to consume products created in the colonizing country ( at exorbitant prices). This ensured that local industries would never be developed.

Some questions before moving on…  What effect would the creation of large plantations owned by a few have later on?  What are the draw backs to relying on a single crop? To growing crops for export?  How might things be different today if resources had been used to develop Latin America?  How might the lack of industries affect these countries today?

Creando Jerarquías  El sistema colonial dependía sobre un pequeño numero de colonos ricos estando arriba y las masas pobres y grandes de gente indígena y esclavos africanos por abajo.  Things to remember: Racism had not existed up until this point. Colonialism allowed for the creation of race and the eventual overtaking of Christian and Western ideals and ideologies.

Matando a culturas  Aunque los conquistadores eran muy pocos, hicieron que todos hablaran su lenguaje y se convirtieran a su religión.  Things to keep in mind: This process was often done violently. Laws were also made that outlawed the culture and tradition of Native and African peoples.

Explotando la tierra  En todos partes del mundo, exploradores descubrieron gente indigena que se sentia conectada a la tierra y otras criaturas en una manera espiritual.  Things to keep in mind: Often Native and African peoples did not believe that land could be treated as “property” or as an “exploitable resource” but as a source of life. Several colonizers however, thought about it much differently.

Questions to consider:  How would the creation of the elite affect development later?  What effect might the policy of ethnocide have on the way that people of native and african descent feel about themselves and their culture?  How might this “grab and exploit”” attitude towards land have an affect today?

 Dave Chapelle Sesame Street Dave Chapelle Sesame Street
