Depending on the context … lo can mean it, him, or you (usted) la can mean it, her, or you (usted) los, las can mean them or you (plural)

Direct Object Pronoun Used when the object receives the action of the verb directly. Quiero verlo. =I want to see him. The pronoun lo (him) receives the action of the verb ver directly.

Direct Object Pronoun With an affirmative (not negative) command, a direct object pronoun follows the verb, like in English, and is attached to the verb. Cómprala. = Buy it.

Con infinitivos y gerundios The direct object pronoun can be attached to the main verb or precede the helping verb. Quiero comprarla.= I want to buy it. La quiero comprar. = I want to buy it. Estoy terminándola.= I am finishing it. La estoy terminando.= I am finishing it.

En todas las otras situaciones The direct object pronoun precedes the verb, unlike in English. Lo compré.= I bought it La terminaré. = I will finish it. Las he hecho. = I have made them. No me llames. = Don’t call me.

La posición de IOP Indirect object pronouns follow the same rules of position as direct object pronouns. After the verb: Escríbele. Quiero escribirle. Estoy escribiéndole. Before the verb: No le escribas. Le he escrito. Le escribí ayer.

Objects and their nouns Even when the indirect object noun is used, the corresponding indirect object pronoun is often used. Quiero escribirle a mi profesor. = I want to write to my teacher. The indirect object pronoun le is used along with mi profesor. The pronoun him would not be used in English.

Direct and indirect object pronouns may be emphasized or clarified by adding a mí a ti a usted a ella a nosotros a ustedes a ellos These expressions may not replace object pronouns. Miguel writes (to) me. = Miguel me escribe. Miguel me escribe a mí. Miguel escribe a mí. (a mí is optional, me is NOT!!)

When 2 object pronouns are needed, the indirect object pronoun precedes the direct object pronoun. Se replaces le and les. Señor Guzmán me la escribió. = Señor Guzmán wrote it to me. Yo se la escribí. = I wrote it to him.
