Remember that direct object pronouns tell WHO or WHAT receives the action of the verb. Los complementos directos

Direct Objects Diagram each part of these English sentences: I want that skirt. I bought some shoes. What is the subject, the verb, the direct object?

Direct Object Pronouns Direct object pronouns take the place of the direct object in a sentence. For example:

Direct Object Pronouns Instead of saying, “I want that skirt,” you can say, “I want it.” The word “it” takes the place of the word “skirt.”

Direct Object Pronouns (English) me you him, her, it us them

Los complementos directos me(me) te(you) lo(him or it) la(her or it) nos(us) os (you all inf.) los (them, you all) las (them, you all)

Placement of Direct Object Pronouns Direct Object Pronouns, me, te, lo, la, nos, los and las are placed either before a conjugated verb or attached to the end of an infinitive, a present participle, or an affirmative command.

Before the Conjugated Verb: ¿Cuándo compraste la falda? La compré hace cinco días.

Before the Conjugated Verb ¿Isabel, tienes mi suéter? No, no lo tengo.

Before the Conjugated Verb ¿Compras esos pantalones? No, no los compro.

Before the verb or after the infinitive: Before the verb: ¿Quieres comprar esa falda? Sí, la quiero comprar. After the infinitive: ¿Quieres comprar esa falda? Sí, quiero comprarla.

Direct Object Pronouns When the pronoun replaces both a masculine and a feminine dircect object noun, we use los. For example:

Direct Object Pronouns ¿Cuándo compraste la falda y el vestido? Los compré el sábado.

Before the verb or after the infinitive: Before the verb: La influencia de los amigos nos puede causar problemas. After the infinitive: La influencia de los amigos puede causarnos problemas.

Before the conjugated verb or attached to the participle: Before the verb: Creo que nuestros amigos nos están influyendo. Attached to the participle: Creo que nuestros amigos están influyéndonos.

Attached to the affirmative command: ■ Dale buenos consejos a tu amigo. When we attach an object pronoun to a present participle or to a command that has more than one syllable, we must add an accent mark to preserve the original stress on the word. Es un buen amigo. Respétalo.

When we use a noun as an indirect object, we must also use the indirect object pronoun. ¿Siempre les haces caso a tus padres? Don’t forget….When the object is a definite person or group of people, we use the PERSONAL A before it to show respect. We will address the indirect object pronouns next…..
