31 Sucedió que por el mismo camino bajaba un sacerdote, el cual lo vio y pasó de largo. 32 De igual modo, un levita que pasó por ahí, lo vio y siguió adelante. 33 Pero un samaritano que iba de viaje, al verlo, se compadeció de él,

34 se le acercó, ungió sus heridas con aceite y vino y se las vendó; luego lo puso sobre su cabalgadura, lo llevó a un mesón y cuidó de él. 35 Al día siguiente sacó dos denarios, se los dio al dueño del mesón y le dijo: ‘Cuida de él y lo que gastes de más, te lo pagaré a mi regreso’. 36 ¿ Cuál de estos tres te parece que se portó como prójimo del hombre que fue asaltado por los ladrones?”

How do you read it?” 27 He said in reply, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.”

28 He replied to him, “You have answered correctly; do this and you will live.” 29 But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Jesus replied, “A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead.

31 A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 32 Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. 33 But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.

34 He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. 35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ 36 Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?”

July 14, 2013 Jesus answers the Lawyer’s question of “who is my neighbor?” with the story of the Good Samaritan. William Barclay in “The Gospel of Luke” makes several observations. First the traveler was foolhardy and reckless in traveling alone. He had no one to blame but himself. Everyone knew that road was dangerous.

William Barclay en “El Evangelio de Lucas” hace varias observaciones. Primero el que viajaba por aquellos lugares fue locamente arriesgado al viajar a solas. No tenia a nadie que culpar mas que a sí mismo. Todo mundo sabia que ese camino era peligroso.

That might mean the loss of his turn of duty in the Temple. That to him was far more important than ministering to a half-dead person. He was not about to risk losing his turn at the Temple.

Segundo, el sacerdote ha de haber tenido en su mente a Números 19:11 Segundo, el sacerdote ha de haber tenido en su mente a Números 19:11. Decía que si tocabas a una persona muerta eras impuro por siete días. Eso podría significar la pérdida de su turno de servicio en el Templo . Eso para él era mucho más importante que el estar atendiendo a una persona que estaba media-muerta. El no estaba por tomar el riesgo de perder su turno en el Templo.

Third, there was the Levite Third, there was the Levite. He knew it was dangerous to stop on that road, making it easier for bandits to rush upon him and overpower him. So, his motto was “safety first.” No sense in risking his safety to help anyone else.

Tercero, estaba el Levito Tercero, estaba el Levito. El sabia que era peligroso demorar en ese camino. Esto era peligroso, haciéndolo fácil para que los bandidos se echaran sobre él y robarlo. Su lema aquí probablemente fue: “primeramente mi seguridad.” No tenia sentido eso de ayudar a nadie más.

Fourth is the Samaritan Fourth is the Samaritan. Jews had no dealings with Samaritans (John 4:9). But he was brave and compassionate enough to stop and help the half-dead man. He binds up his wounds, pours oil and wine on them; sets him on his own beast and takes him to an inn. There we find his credit is good. Clearly, the innkeeper was prepared to trust him. He promises to re-pay him for any expenses incurred. That was pretty good for a Samaritan!

Pero esté fue lo valiente y compasivo lo suficiente para detenerse y ayudar al hombre que estaba ya medio-muerto. Le vendo las heridas, les puso aceite y vino, y luego lo puso en su propia montura, lo llevo a una posada y lo cuido. Allí vemos que su crédito es bueno. Claramente el dueño de la posada le tenia confianza. Le promete que le pagara a la vuelta si es que haya gastos. ¡ Eso fue muy bueno para un samaritano !

Jesus then asks “Which of these three, proved to be a good neighbor Jesus then asks “Which of these three, proved to be a good neighbor?” The lawyer answered: “The one who had mercy on him.” And Jesus said: “Go and do likewise.” Jesús entonces pregunta “Cuál de esos tres se hizo prójimo del que cayo en manos de los bandidos?” El letrado contesto: “El que tuvo compasión de él.” Jesús le dijo: “Pues anda, haz tú lo mismo.”

It is clear that it is not enough to belong to a certain social category of people. It won’t save you to say you are a Catholic, or that you worked miracles in God’s name, or if you prophesied and moved mountains. If you don’t have love, you are nothing (1 Corinthians 13:1). And love expresses itself not just in words but in deeds.

No te salvará decir que eres un Catolico, o que hiciste milagros en el nombre del Señor, o que profetizaste o moviste montañas. Si no tienes amor, no eres nada (1 Corintios 13:1). Y el amor se expresa no solo con palabras, sino tambien con obras.

St. Augustine has some beautiful observations St. Augustine has some beautiful observations. He says Jesus is the Good Samaritan who took pity on us when he came passing our way. He found us naked, without any clothes; he found us beaten up, not in good health; he found us lying on the ground not standing on our own two feet. He discovered us straying. He lifted us up from the ground, and placed us on his own mount. He carried us like straying sheep on his own shoulders into paradise, from which we had fallen. He called us back into the hundred, that is, into the perfect number. Isaiah 53:4 says “He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows .”

Nos encontró desnudos, sin ropa alguna; nos encontró golpeados, y no en buena salud; nos encontró tirados en el suelo y no de pie. Nos discubrió descarriados. Nos levantó del suelo, y nos puso en su propia cabalgadura. Nos llevó como ovejas descarriadas en sus hombros al paraíso, de donde habiamos caido. Nos llamó a regresar a las cien ovejas, el numero perfecto. Isaias 53:4 dice “Él soportó nuestros sufrimientos y cargó con nuestros dolores.”

Jesus tells us to go and do likewise Jesus tells us to go and do likewise.  This is a call to put on the garment of Christ.  This is a call to practice the compassion of Christ with those in need.  Like the Good Samaritan we can have compassion on the needy who pass our way. Perhaps it may be that he needs clothes, food, lodging, or medical assistance. Is it possible to help by providing some form of assistance?  If he happens to be straying from the way of the Lord, perhaps we can find a way to bring him back to Christ.  It could be in some form of advice, or sharing of a few words of wisdom.  Maybe you could invite him to a prayer meeting, or to church, or to pray the Rosary together.  Above all, do everything with love!

Jesús nos dice “Id y haced lo mismo Jesús nos dice “Id y haced lo mismo.”  Esto es una llamada a ponerse las vestiduras de Cristo.  Es una llamada a practicar la compasión de Cristo con aquellos que están en la necesidad. Como el Buen Samaritano podemos tener compasión con el necesitado que pasa por nuestro camino.  Quizás sea que necesite ropa, o comida, o asistencia medica.  ¿Será posible proveer alguna forma de asistencia?  Si acaso se ha salido del camino del Señor, quizás encontremos alguna manera de traerlo a Cristo.  Puede ser una forma de consejo, o de compartir unas cuantas palabras sabias.  Quizás podamos invitarlo a una junta de oración, o a la iglesia, o a rezar un Rosario en casa.  Sobre todo, ¡haz todo con amor!
