John 8: 31 - 42 31 Jesus then said to those Jews who believed in him, “If you remain in my word, you will truly be my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”

33 They answered him, “We are descendants of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free’ ? ” 34 Jesus answered them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is a slave of sin. 35 A slave does not remain in a household forever, but a son always remains.

36 So if a son frees you, then you will truly be free. 37 I know that you are descendants of Abraham. But you are trying to kill me, because my word has no room among you. 38 I tell you what I have seen in the Father’s presence; then do what you have heard from the Father.”

39 They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham 39 They answered and said to him, “Our father is Abraham.” Jesus said to them, “If you were Abraham’s children, you would be doing the works of Abraham. 40 But now you are trying to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God; Abraham did not do this.

41 You are doing the works of your father 41 You are doing the works of your father ! ” So they said to him, “We are not illegitimate. We have one Father, God.” 42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and am here; I did not come on my own, but he sent me.

Gospel of the Lord

Reflections on John 8:31 - 42 Reflexiónes en Juan 8:31 - 42 by Fr. Sam Rosales, S.J. Mar. 12, 2008 We begin by noticing that Jesus in this passage was talking to those who believed in him, and they were giving him a hard time. That means that there were others who did not believe in him. They were the “raging enemies” mentioned in the entrance antiphon (Psalm 17:48-49).

Jesus told them that if they remained in his word, they would truly be his disciples, and they would know the truth, and the truth would set them free (John 8:32).

How do we remain in his word How do we remain in his word? It is by remaining in his presence, abiding in his love, obeying his holy will. His will is that we love one another. His will is that we pick up our cross and follow him. His will is that we pray always. If we love one another we speak the truth to one another. We make a serious study of his word daily.

It appears that his audience was fickle It appears that his audience was fickle. That means that now they listened, but then again, not so. They started arguing with him. Some thought it was enough to be a descendant of Abraham. They thought that was all they needed to be saved.

Jesus answered them by saying: “Amen, amen, I say to you…” Whenever Jesus uses this phrase it means: “I want you to really listen to me.” He sensed they were not really listening. To listen, is to change behavior, as a result of what you hear.

They heard, but it didn’t change anything They heard, but it didn’t change anything. They were still trying to kill him. That was their sin. And Jesus pointed out to them, in no uncertain terms, they were acting like slaves, and not like sons.

Sons of Abraham would have listened to his teachings Sons of Abraham would have listened to his teachings. His teachings are the truth. Had they listened, they would have been freed from their sin. But since they were not listening, Jesus told them they would die in their sins (John 8:24).

Again and again, Jesus keeps offering answers to all their questions Again and again, Jesus keeps offering answers to all their questions. Again and again he is rejected, systematically. I think I know what Jesus felt when he was rejected. He is rejected again and again in our own day. We, who have tried to inform people, showing how evil abortion is, have been rejected, again and again. No matter what we say, we know that they are not really listening!

A week before Holy Week, the readings Holy Mother the Church chooses are meant to convey to us the mind of Christ as he approached death. We begin to see a sense of urgency. Jesus is running out of time, and he knows it.

Do you understand what the Lord went through for us Do you understand what the Lord went through for us? Can we walk the walk with Jesus today, as he brings to our minds the events that led to his passion and death? Can we “put on the mind of Christ” as St. Paul suggests? (Philippians 2:5). That is what we do in Holy Week, we try to understand, in a deeper way, what Jesus went through, for our sake. This can be a deeply moving experience.

Once Jesus goes away, no other possibility exists, for delivering them from sin. Jesus reminded them of this when he said: “No one comes to the Father, but by me” (John 14:6).

Why didn’t they listen. Why were they incapable of listening Why didn’t they listen? Why were they incapable of listening? Their deeds were evil. They were full of envy, and lies, and hatred, and hypocrisy. Indeed, they did not belong to God. Do we listen to God? Do we belong to God? Do we love him? Good questions.

¿Pertenecemos a Dios? ¿Lo amamos?” Buenas preguntas.
