Imperfect Subjunctive Tense Expressing Emotions and Opinions about Past Events Spanish 3, Chapter 4 , page 201-203 Spanish 4: p402-404

1. The same rules that govern the use of the present subjunctive govern the uses of the imperfect subjunctive. It is the tense of the verb in the main clause that determines whether the present or imperfect subjunctive must be used in the dependent clause. If the verb of the main clause is in the present or future tense, the present subjunctive is used in the dependent clause. Present or Future → Present Subjunctive (PF→PS)

Examples Ex: Main clause in the present tense. Quiero que ellos me lo digan. (present subjunctive) Ex: Main clause in the future tense. Será necesario que nosotros lo sepamos para mañana. (present subjunctive)

2. When the verb of the main clause is in the preterite, imperfect or conditional, the imperfect subjunctive must be used in the dependent clause. Preterite, Imperfect, Conditional→ Imperfect Subjunctive (PIC→IS)

Examples Ex. Main clause in the preterite tense. Yo insistí en que ellos estuvieran allí. (imperfect subjunctive) Ex. Main clause in the imperfect tense. Quería que ellas me lo dijeran. (imperfect subjunctive) Ex. Main clause in the conditional tense. Sería necesario que nosotros lo supiéramos. (imperfect subjunctive)

Steps to conjugating the Imperfect Subjunctive: 1. The imperfect subjunctive of all verbs is formed by dropping the –on ending on the third person plural, ellos(as) form, of the preterite tense of the verb. All regular, irregular and stem-changing forms will also be seen in the imperfect subjunctive as they occur in the 3rd person plural form of the preterite. Ex. Hablar---on Comier---on Pidier---on Tuvier---on Dijer---on

2. To this stem, you add the following endings for all verbs (-ar, -er, -ir): -a -amos -as -a -an *Nosotros will have an accent on the vowel before the letter “r.” Ex: hablara habláramos hablaras hablara hablaran

More examples Comer Pedir comiera comiéramos pidiera pidiéramos Comieras pidieras comiera comieran pidiera pidieran Tener Decir tuviera tuviéramos dijera dijéramos tuvieras dijeras tuviera tuvieran dijera dijeran

3. The imperfect subjunctive can take the following endings instead of those you saw above. You follow the same steps of starting in the ellos form of the preterite but you take off –ron. The meaning is exactly the same and the endings are used for all verbs (-ar, -er, -ir). Endings: -se -semos -ses -se -sen Ex: Beber- bebieron- bebie bebiese bebiésemos bebieses bebiese bebiesen
