3 El imperfect de subjuntivo To conjugate a verb in the imperfect subjunctive, you must first remember the 3 rd person plural of the preterite. Instead of using the infinitive for a stem, the imperfect subjunctive uses the 3 rd person plural of the preterite (without the -ron).

4 Stem Example: Imperfect Subjunctive Stem Formula: imperfect subjunctive stem = 3rd person plural preterite (without the -ron) Ustedes hablaron -> habla- Ellos tuvieron -> tuvie- Ellas vieron -> vie-

8 Usos….. If the verb in the independent clause expresses wishes, emotions, recommendations, possible non-realities, doubts, denial, etc. and is in the preterite, imperfect or conditional tense then the subjunctive verb in the independent clause will be imperfect subjunctive. Ejemplos: Le dije que lavara los platos. (I told him to wash the dishes.) Nosotros dudábamos que ella viniera. (We doubted that she was coming.)

9 Usos….. When we want to indicate or hope for unlikely or impossible events using the expression "Ojalá" or "Ojalá que" (means roughly "If only..."), the verb following it will be imperfect subjunctive. Ejemplo: Ojalá que hiciera calor en invierno. (If only it were hot in winter.)
