What is an imperative? Examples in English: Clean your room! Turn left. Walk three blocks. What is the subject of these examples?

How does this compare to Spanish? Imperatives are also used in Spanish to tell someone needs to do or must do. The purpose of imperatives are the same in Spanish and English. What is different however is: The form and the subject(s)

Types of commands Formal singular Informal singular Formal plural Informal plural (Spain only) affirmative usted tú ustedes vosotros negative Tú no***

Informal (tú) commands Have 2 separate forms: one for affirmative and one for negative. Today we are going to concentrate on affirmative commands.

Most verbs – regular, irregular and stem-change verbs The form of verb used is the same as the form used for él, ella in present tense. Ex: Infinitivo Presente Él, ella, usted Mandato afirmativo para “tú” limpiar Tomás limpia la casa. ¡Limpia tu cuarto! Comer María come una banana. ¡Come una banana! abrir Marcos abre el libro ¡Abre tu libro! Jugar Juan juega al béisbol ¡Juega mejor! empezar El partido empieza a las 3. ¡Empieza a las 3!

Cuidado – los objetos directos When you have a direct object pronoun and an affirmative command: attach the pronoun to the end of the command form of the verb. Ex: Sing it lower! ( it = the song) ¡Cántala más bajo! ( yes, bajo is also an adverb that means lower in pitch or volume)

Irregular affirmative commands Certain verbs (root verbs) have irregular tú affirmative commands that must be memorized. infinitivo Mandato afirmativo tú decir di salir sal Hacer Haz Ser sé infinitivo Mandato afirmativo tú Ir ve tener ten poner pon venir ven

Verbs that have one of these root verbs and a prefix will also be irregular. Deshacer - to undo – desház Obtener – to obtain – obtén Posponer – to postpone – pospón Prevenir – to prevent, to avoid – prevén Other examples: rehacer, retener, detener, mantener, sostener, suponer, convenir
