GUSTAR (and similar verbs)

EXLPANATION GUSTAR is not conjugated like other regular verbs. It is NEVER used in the “yo”, “tú”, or “nosotros” forms. When a person likes something, they are not doing any action to the thing. The PERSON IS NOT THE SUBJECT. THE THING BEING LIKED is the SUBJECT – it does (they do) something to a person.

EXPLANATION CON’T. I like ice cream. I am not doing anything to the ice cream. The ice cream is doing something to me – it is pleasing me. Therefore, THE ICE CREAM IS THE SUBJECT. Ice cream is pleasing to me. Since the ice cream is technically doing the action, we have to conjugate gustar for “it”. This would be third person: GUSTA

If the thing I like is PLURAL, then it is “they” are pleasing to me. I like French fries. (French fries are pleasing to me.) Since the French fries are technically doing the action, we have to conjugate gustar for “they”. This would be third person: GUSTAN

HOW DO WE KNOW WHO IS AFFECTED? Because “gusta” or “gustan” is used NO MATTER WHO it affects, we need to use something in front of it to tell us who it is. The technical term for this would be an indirect object pronoun. However, all you need to know for now is that the following pronoun will go in front of “gusta” or “gustan” to identify the person: MENOS TE LELES

GUSTAR – to be pleasing to (to like) ME GUSTA(N)NOS GUSTA(N) TE GUSTA(N) LE GUSTA(N) LES GUSTA(N) THIS VERB IS NEVER USED WITH ANY OTHER “AR” VERB ENDING!

EXAMPLES: Me gusta el fútbol.Me gustan los deportes. ¿Te gusta jugar el fútbol? ¿Te gustan los deportes? Él le gusta la pizza.Ella le gustan las frutas. Nos gusta el béisbol.Nos gustan los equipos españoles. Ellos les gusta leer.Ellas les gustan los libros. Uds. les gusta la clase.Uds. les gustan las clases.

RELATIONSHIPS – person v. verb The person is related to the indirect object pronounThe verb is related to the thing A mí, me gusta el fútbol. A tí, ¿te gusta el baloncesto? A él, le gusta la pizza. A nosotros, nos gusta el béisbol. A ellos, les gusta leer. A Uds., les gusta la clase.

OTHER VERBS THAT FUNCTION THE SAME interesar – to interestme interesa(n) aburrir – to boreme aburre(n) encantar – to love (thing)me encanta(n) fascinar – to fascinateme fascina(n) sorprender – to surpriseme sorprende(n) me, te, le, nos, les – can be changed depending on WHO it is happening to THESE VERBS ARE NEVER USED WITH ANY OTHER “AR/ER/IR” VERB ENDING!
