Present Tense of -ar Verbs
Transcripción de la presentación:

Isn’t so bad when you get the hang of it!

 The verbs we learned in Chapter 1 were in the infinitive form.  That means their English translation would be like… “to” do something.  Hablar=to speak; correr=to run; etc.  Verbs fall under one of three categories: -ar, -er, and –ir.  Most verbs in Spanish end in –ar.  We will be studying how to conjugate verbs in –ar today.

 To conjugate a verb, that means we are going to change the ending to indicate who or what is doing the action.  Instead of saying “to speak” (hablar), we will say “I speak” (hablo) or “you speak” (hablas).  Do you see how the ending changed? No? Then check out the next slide.

 Yo hablo  Tú hablas  Usted habla  Él habla  Ella habla  Nosotros hablamos  Vosotros habláis  Ustedes hablan  Ellos hablan  Ellas hablan

 To conjugate a regular –ar verb, you drop the last two letters (ar) off the infinitive.  Then you add the appropriate ending to what’s left, which is the root, or stem.  So now you can say, I speak, you speak, he speaks, she speaks, we speak, you all speak, they speak!  Let’s look at it again!

 Yo hablo  Tú hablas  Usted habla  Él habla  Ella habla  Nosotros hablamos  Vosotros habláis  Ustedes hablan  Ellos hablan  Ellas hablan

You can conjugate all other regular –ar verbs the SAME WAY!

 Yo canto  Tú cantas  Usted canta  Él canta  Ella canta  Nosotros cantamos  Vosotros cantáis  Ustedes cantan  Ellos cantan  Ellas cantan

BailarDibujar  Yo bailo  Tú bailas  Usted baila  Él baila  Ella baila  Nosotros bailamos  Vosotros bailáis  Ustedes bailan  Ellos bailan  Ellas bailan  Yo dibujo  Tú dibujas  Usted dibuja  Él dibuja  Ella dibuja  Nosotros dibujamos  Vosotros dibujáis  Ustedes dibujan  Ellos dibujan  Ellas dibujan

It’s the same ending for each one!

 Write the correct form of the verb in parentheses.  Yo (practicar):  Ella (bailar):  Nosotros (esquiar):  Ellos (trabajar):  Usted (montar):  Él (tocar):  Tú (escuchar):

 Check your work!  Yo (practicar): practico  Ella (bailar): baila  Nosotros (esquiar): esquiamos  Ellos (trabajar): trabajan  Usted (montar): monta  Él (tocar): toca  Tú (escuchar): escuchas

 It’s easy! Here’s what you need to remember.  If it’s one name, person, or thing, you use the él or ella form (ending: -a). (Example: Julia baila.)  If it’s more than one name, person, or thing, you use the ellos or ellas form (ending: -an). (Example: Marta y Julia bailan.)  If “I” am included in the group, you always use the nosotros form (ending: -amos). (Example: Julia y yo bailamos.)  If “you” are included in the group, you use either the vosotros form (ending: -áis) or the ustedes form (ending: -an). (Example: Tú y Julia bailan).

 Write the correct form of the verb in parentheses.  Mariana (dibujar):  Pablo y Elena (trabajar):  El profesor (hablar):  Mi amigo (practicar):  Pedro y yo (usar):  Juan (cantar):  Los chicos (nadar):  Tú y María (esquiar):

 Check your answers!  Mariana (dibujar): dibuja  Pablo y Elena (trabajar): trabajan  El profesor (hablar): habla  Mi amigo (practicar): practica  Pedro y yo (usar): usamos  Juan (cantar): canta  Los chicos (nadar): nadan  Tú y María (esquiar): esquian (esquiáis)

Now…on to more practice! Don’t forget to study for the quiz!
