3 –ar Lets look at the largest of these families, the –ar verb family. Verb Families 3 There are 3 families of verbs in Spanish. They are determined by the ending of the verb. Verbs in Spanish end in: arerir

4 –AR Verbs Ejemplos: = to help = to walk = to sing = to buy = to desire = to teach = to enter = to listen ayudar caminar cantar comprar desear enseñar entrar escuchar

5 –AR Verbs Más ejemplos: = to study = to speak = to arrive = to look (at) = to need = to travel = to visit estudiar hablar llegar mirar necesitar viajar visitar

6 Más ejemplos : = to look for, to search = to answer = to wait for, to expect = to take, to carry = to pass, to pass by, to happen = to prepare buscar contestar esperar llevar pasar preparar

7 –arInfinitive = the –ar form of a verb Ejemplo: hablar Ejemplo: hablar = to speak –o, –as, –a, –amos, –ái–an. –o, –as, –a, –amos, –áis and –an. –ar The –ar verb endings in the present tense are: Stem = the verb without its –ar ending Ej emplo: habl– Ej emplo: habl– Parts of a Verb

8 Ejemplo: yohablar ar habl–. To make the yo form of the verb hablar (to speak), take the infinitive, drop the –ar and you have the stem: habl–. ohabl–. Add an –o ending to the stem habl–. Yo hablo. = I speak. Forming the Conjugated Verb –ar To form present tense –ar verbs, you ar drop the ar ending of the infinitive form of the verb and add the appropriate ending for each of the subjects.

9 The endings added to the stem of an –ar verb in the present tense are: The Endings yo = tú = usted = él, ella = –o–o –as –a nosotros/as = vosotros/as = ustedes = ellos/as = –amos –áis –an

10 hablar hablar = to speak hablarar habl Take the infinitive of the verb hablar, drop the –ar, and you are left with the stem habl–. Now, add the endings: Ejemplo: nosotros/as hablamos vosotros/as habláis ustedes hablan ellos/as hablan yo hablo tú hablas usted habla él, ella habla

11 yo yo canto = I sing tú tú cantas = you sing (informal) usted usted canta = you sing (formal) él, ella él, ella canta = he/she sings nosotros/as nosotros/as cantamos = we sing vosotros/as vosotros/as cantáis = you all sing (Spain) ustedes ustedes cantan = you all sing ellos/as ellos/as cantan = they sing Otro ejemplo: cantar = to sing Singular Plural

13 If the subject of the sentence is a singular noun, use the él/ella form. Nouns María María habla español. If the subject of the sentence is a plural noun, use the ellos/ellas form. Juan y Pablo Juan y Pablo cantan. Los muchachos Los muchachos compran los libros. Ejemplo:Ejemplos:
