Imperfect Subjunctive

Subjunctive Tenses There are TWO verb tenses used in the subjunctive El Presente Yo dudo que los chiles sean picantes El imperfecto Yo dudaba que los chiles fueran picantes.

Subjunctive Tenses The past subjunctive is used in the same contexts and situations as the present subjunctive, except that it generally describes actions, events, or conditions that have already happened. Mi padre dudaba que nosotros comiéramos toda la pizza. My father doubted that we ate the whole pizza. Me sorprendió que Uds. no vinieran. It surprised me that you didn’t come.

WEIRDO Remember the Acronym The imperfect subjunctive is also used in those cases in which the subjunctive is required but the verb of the main clause is in the past tense or conditional. It is important to know the expressions on your WEIRDO handout. Wish, want, emotion, impersonal expression, recommendation, doubt, denial, and ojalá

Past Subjunctive Endings Start with the preterit tense “ellos,” then drop the (-aron/-ieron) and add: AR ER/IR Yo -ara -iera Tú -aras -ieras Él/Ella/Ud. -ara -iera Nosotros -áramos -iéramos Ellos/Ellas/Uds. -aran -ieran

Past Subjunctive Endings Start with the preterit tense “ellos,” then drop (-aron/-ieron) and the imperfect subjunctive endings: Form the past subjunctive by taking preterit tense (ellos) then drop (-aron/ -ieron) and then adding the appropriate Imperfect subjunctive ending. For example, let's conjugate: tener Hablar habl ara aron We start with the preterit “ellos” form: tuvieron comer We drop the ”-ieron" ending: tuv- com ieron iera We'll use the “yo" form for this example: tuviera

(-er or –ir) (-AR) é aste ó amos aron í iste ió imos ieron Just in case you forgot the preterit endings (-er or –ir) í iste ió imos ieron (-AR) é aste ó amos aron

Forming the Imperfect Subjunctive Start with the preterit form “ellos,” drop (-aron/-ieron), and add… cantar aprender vivir cantara aprendiera viviera cantaras aprendieras vivieras cantáramos aprendiéramos viviéramos cantaran aprendieran vivieran The yo and él forms of the imperfect subjunctive are identical. In the nosotros form of both conjugations, an acute accent ´ is added to the last vowel in the radical. There are two complete sets of conjugations for the Spanish imperfect subjunctive. Although you only need to memorize and use one or the other, you still need to be able to recognize both. The -RA set of conjugations is more colloquial than the -SE set. The yo and él forms of the imperfect subjunctive are identical. In the nosotros form ´ is added to the last vowel in the stem.

NOTE: There are NO IRREGULAR VERBS other than whatever irregularities exist in the preterit form. estuvieron hicieron supieron estuvieron durmieron fueron pidieron dijeron If it is irregular in the preterit form it will be irregular in the past subjunctive estar (ellos) estuvieron estuvieran
