2 YOU USE THE PRETERITE TO EXPRESS ACTIONS THAT BEGAN AND ENDED AT A DEFINITE TIME IN THE PAST. The preterite tense is used with following words or phrases: Ayer – yesterday Anoche – last night Ayer por la tarde – yesterday in the afternoon Ayer por la mañana – yesterday in the morning El año pasado – last year La semana pasada – last week

3 The preterite of regular –ar verbs is formed by dropping the infinitive ending –ar and adding the appropriate endings to the stem. 6 IR Y SER EN EL PRETÉRITO The verbs ir and ser are irregular in the preterite tense. They have identical forms. The verb ser is not used often in the preterite.

7 TELL IF THE VERB IS ACTING AS SER OR IR El señor Martínez fue profesor de español. Él fue a España. Mi abuela fue médica. Mi abuela fue al consultorio de la médica. Tú fuiste a la playa. Nosotros fuimos de compras al mercado. Yo fui una estudiante.
