The imperfect tense

A habitual, repeated, ongoing events and activities in the past Yo comía mucho pescado cuando estabamos de vacaciones. I used to eat a lot of fish when we were on vacation. Él jugaba a fútbol todos los días cuando era pequeño. He used to play soccer every day when he was a child.

An action or state that was in progress in the past Todos los invitados bebían y bailaban. All the guest were drinking and dancing. Estaban muy contentos. They were very happy.

Describe characteristic and condition in the past El desfile era muy largo y la gente bailaba. The parade was very long and the people was dancing.

To tell time in the past Era la una de la tarde, no eran las dos. It was one in the afternoon, it was not two.

Express a person age in the past Ella tenía trece años entonces. She was thirteen then.
