General Conversation and Translation lunes, 12 de noviembre de 2018 General Conversation and Translation Tips for improving speaking SPEAK! – Talk to yourself around the house, meet up with someone else to practise together, or have a conversation with your teacher – just keep practicing! MAKE MISTAKES! – Don’t be afraid to get it wrong. We don’t use perfect English all the time and sometimes fall over our words or say the wrong thing. It’s no different in Spanish – the trick is to LEARN from your mistakes, aim to improve, and get help when you need it! USE RESOURCES! – use your green booklet, buy the revision guides, ask for extra work to do!

Translation – work out what the question is asking of you. Don’t forget to translate the small words! Un/a amigo/a espanol te ha preguntado lo que sabes de las distintas regiones de Espana. Escribele un correo electronico dando tu respuesta A Spanish friend has asked you what you know of (about) the different regions of Spain. Write him/her an email giving your answer Chunk the sentence up – learn set phrases – use common sense

Translation – translate the bullet points. Use common sense if you don’t know every word – can you get the general meaning? Most importantly, which tense do you need to write in for each? PRESENT – a description or information, reasons, what you think PAST – pasado, hiciste PRESENT - information, reasons, what you think FUTURE – gustaría, en el futuro You will ALWAYS be asked for THREE tenses – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Learn key words to help you work this out!

Translation – translate the bullet points The description of a region and your opinion A visit that you have made there in the past The environmental problems of the region A region that you would like to visit in the future and why You will ALWAYS be asked for THREE tenses – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE Learn key words to help you work this out!

Read through the text – what tense will you need to write in? What key words can you look for to help you work this out? Look for key words: normalmente, generalmente, suelo all refer to the present Pasado, verbs ending in é/iste/imos or fui/fuimos all refer to the PAST Gustaría, quiero + inf, future all refer to the FUTURE Look for cognates or familiar words How well do you know your verbs??? CHUNK your sentences – break it down

Last year, instead of going on holiday, I worked as a volunteer for/in an organisation which helps needy children. One day, we went to a trip/excursion to the coast. After spending some time/hours on the beach, we went to a theme park.

Read through the text – what tense will you need to write in? What key words can you look for to help you work this out? Think about key words Can you conjugate your verbs? CHUNK your sentences – break it down Check and DOUBLE CHECK to make sure ALL relevant words are translated DON’T MISS THE SMALL WORDS!

Vivo con mis padres y mi hermano en una casa pequeña Vivo con mis padres y mi hermano en una casa pequeña. Comparto una habitación con mi hermano. Pienso/Creo que es molesto y discuto con él a menudo. Me llevo bien con mis padres.

LEVEL UP – KEEP PRACTICING - Go through the first section of your Speaking Booklet on Family and Friends. - Try to improve on your work by adding in more information, connectives, etc. - If you have typed your answers onto a PC, make your amendments and print it off for next week. - If you hand wrote your answers, think about whether you can type them up – this will save you time later if you need to redraft or amend your work. - See me or Mrs Broom anytime for any help.
