NEW: DIRECT OBJECTS You should all know by now how to pick out a direct object in a sentence and how to use them in SPANISH. Sometimes we use verbs that warrant the use of infinitives tener + que + infinitive Ir + a + infinitive deber + infinitive Saber + infinitive Poder + infinitive Pensar + infinitive Querer + infinitive Preferir + infinitive Aprender a + infinitive

NEW WHEN USING THESE PHRASES WITH Direct Object Pronouns, WHERE DOES THE PRONOUN GO? 1 of 2 places: in front of the CONJUGATED VERB or ATTACHED TO THE END OF THE INFINITIVE. ¿Dónde vas a poner la ropa? La voy a poner en el armario. Voy a ponerla en el armario. ¿Quién puede jugar al golf? Maricela lo puede jugar. Maricela puede jugarlo.

MáS…. ¿Cuándo prefieres estudiar la historia? La prefiero estudiar esta tarde. Prefiero estudiarla esta tarde. NOW YOUR TURN. WRITE A RESPONSE TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTION ¿Te gusta ver la téle? ¿Cuándo puedes hacer mi tarea? ¿Tienes que lavar tu carro hoy?

NEW: PRETERITE OF –ER, -IR ENDINGS FOR –ER AND –IR ARE THE SAME!!!! -í -imos -iste -ió -ieron El verano pasado yo aprendí a bucear. Ayer yo comí muchas frutas y verduras. El lunes, mi hermano escribió su nombre por la primera vez.

Hoy por la mañana mis padres y yo leimos un libro. Durante el dia ayer nosotros escribimos muchos ensayos en la clase de inglés. Yo no comí nada en la cena anoche. Ayer por la tarde todos los estudiantes salieron temprano de la escuela.

Write an answer to the following questions…. ¿Adónde fuiste de vacaciones? ¿Qué hiciste allí? ¿Cómo lo pasaste? ¿Te gustó?

Nouns that end in –eo, -io Latin words for buildings and places have carried into many modern languages, including Spanish. In many place names, the Latin ending-um (which remains in a number of English words) changed to an –io or –eo in Spanish. Some you already know: Stadium Gymnasium Museum

Continuado….. See if you can match the following definitions with the Spanish words in the list: Where you stand to deliver a speech Usually found in a cemetary Where you can see all kinds of sea life Where you sit when you see school plays or concerts Where you go to learn about stars and planets Where the ancient Romans went to see sporting events El auditorio El podio El acuario El planetario El coliseo El mausoleo

Bellringer: Translate Last week I bought some new jeans. The trip was tremendous. My brother did not eat his vegetables last night. My mom cooked dinner and I took out the trash. You went out last weekend with Pedro and Juanita. Did you see the animals at the zoo?

The personal a You know that the direct object in Spanish is the person

Bellringer: Write a sentence using the following words: 1. Hay que 2. Es necesario 3. Es importante 4. Debemos En la vecindad

deber = should, ought to Present Tense debo debemos debes debe deben Debes reciclar mucho en tu casa y en la escuela. Debemos recoger basura de las yardas y de las calles. A Juan le gusta mucho ayudar a los niños. Debe trabajar como voluntario en una escuela primaria.

Bellringer: p 405 Read the descriptions of each person’s interests. Then, write a sentence to tell where each person should work. Teresa should….. Rafael should….. Samuel should….. Bárbara should…..

Decir = to say, to tell Can be used as to say or to tell depending on the context of the conversation Conjugations: digo decimos dices dice dicen

Ejemplos Mi mamá dice que es necesario recoger la ropa del piso de mi cuarto. Yo digo que no es importante estudiar mucho. Los políticos dicen que es importante votar en las elecciones. ¿Qué piensas tú? ¿Piensas que es necesario reciclar vidrio, papel, y plástico en tu comunidad?

Práctica….. En tu libro, página cuatrocientos ocho Actividad 9 Actividad 10: Write 6 sentences to tell what you do to help in your community using nunca, siempre, a veces, a menudo

Bellringer: Translate My mom says it is necessary to recycle cans, glass, and cardboard. We say that people should donate (donar) used things to the poor. I went to the recycling center the other day. Do you think it is important to study in school?

Listening Activity: CW Handout Actividades 5, 6

Review: Direct Objects Receive the action of the verb Answer Who? Or What? Received the action of the verb In Spanish, usually means “it” or “them” When DOP replace the DO, pronoun goes IN FRONT OF THE CONJUGATED VERB, or ATTACHED TO THE INFINITIVE.

Práctica ¿Recogiste la basura de la grama? Reply: Yes , I picked it up. 2. ¿Llevaron uds. Las botellas, las cajas, y los libros al centro de reciclaje? Reply: Yes, we took them to the recycling center. 3. ¿Limpiaste el baño? Reply: Yes, I cleaned it yesterday. 4. ¿Miraste el episodio de American Idol el martes? Reply: No, I did not see it Tuesday.

Indirect Objects Tells to whom or for whom an action is performed. IOP used to replace an Indirect object noun Les di dinero ayer. I gave them money yesterday. I gave money tot hem yesterday. Te llevo el vidrio y las latas. I carry the glass and cass to you. Ayer te compré unos tenis nuevos. Yesterday I bought some new shoes for you.

Continuado….. The Indirect Object Pronoun (IOP) comes before the conjugated verb, or attached to the INFINITIVE. Mañana voy a darle dinero a mi mami. Mañana le voy a dar dinero a mi mami. Quiero darle un juguete al niño. Le quiero dar un juguete al niño. INDIRECT OBJECT PRONOUNS me nos te le les

Bellringer: U R THE TEACHER On a CLEAN sheet of paper, you are to write a short lesson plan to teach your classmates about IOP. Tell how to find them, what questions to ask, what the IOPs in Spanish are, and write two example sentences. Remember, U R THE TEACHER

Ejemplos: Mi mamá me ayudó a hacer un pastel anoche. El profesor les da lecciones de piano a los niños. A menudo les ayudo a los ancianos. Me gusta ayudarles a los pobres. Hoy, yo les voy a dar un examen de vocabulario a uds.

A veces…. Sometimes, when you haven’t specified, you may get confused with le and les. Because le and les have more than one meaning, you can specify who the action is to or for by adding a + the corresponding name, noun, or pronoun (to the end of the sentence) Les doy lecciones a los niños todos los días. Le ayudé a Lupe ayer. Hace dos meses le compré un carro a mi hermano. Me encanta llevarles juguetes a los niños enfermos.

Fill in the blank with the correct IOP Yo siempre ____ ayudo a los ancianos. Mis padres ____ compraron un carro nuevo el año pasado. Leana _____ dio un regalo en tu cumpleaños. Los maestros _____ da mucha tarea a nosotros. Los adultos _____ dicen a los jóvenes que es malo beber alcohól y fumar cigarros.

¡¡Tu turno!! Translate I sometimes buy clothing for poor people. My parents always give me money. The boys helped us clean the room. My siblings never invite me to the parties. Yesterday, I invited them to my birthday party.

Actividad: Handout

QUIZ!!!!!

Review IOPs Answer: What are the IOPs in Spanish? Where does IOP go? To whom? For whom? What are the IOPs in Spanish? Where does IOP go? T/F: You can have an IOP and not have an a phrase. Yo le di dinero ayer. T/F: You can have an a phrase and not have an IOP: FALSE. If you are saying the action is to or for someone and you actually specify who it is for, then you HAVE to use an IOP

Ejemplos: Yo le di dinero ayer. le can have various meanings: him, her, you (formal) If you have already mention who you are talking about, then the a phrase is not necessary. BUT if you have not mentioned the person, then the a phrase might be necessary. Yo le di dinero a Juan ayer.

¡Compañeros! With your compañeros, you must decide what elements the sentences need. Present or past tense? Direct or Indirect Objects? What must follow certain verbs? Etc.

Translate Juan helped me yesterday. –Juan me ayudó ayer. One should help others. It is important to work as a volunteer in camps. My mom gave me money last week. Pedro called you last night. (to call = llamar) The kids helped us pick up the trash in the neighborhood.

Bellringer: Translate The teacher gave us homework yesterday. Juan visited his grandparents last summer. The volunteers helped us plant flowers. (to plant = plantar) Sometimes people take food to old people. I invited them to the party. We teach kids how to read. (enseñar + a)

Translate Juan and Julieta helped me with my homework. Carlos mowed the yard for us. Halley gave me a gift. I tell them that it is important to recycle. She tells us that we should study for the test.
