W HEN WAS WRITING INVENTED ? Nobody Knows exactly when writing was invented, but people have always wanted to communicate their experiences. From the time the earliest painting appeared on cave walls around 30,000 BC to the largest digital books, reading and writing are an integral part of our history. cave walls The first books were written on clay tablets around 3,500 BC in Sumeria, a part in present-day Iraq. To make the tablets, symbols were pressed into clay and then the clay was baked hard. Some of these ancient books are still read today, such as The Epic of Gilgamesh, which tells the adventures of a famous Sumerian King.clay tablets The Epic of Gilgamesh Around 2,500 BC, people in Egypt began writing on scrolls. Around 200 BC, it was replaced by parchment.parchment. Parchment was made from animal skins. The skins were threated with lime and hot water and then they were stretched thin. Partchment, however, was not used in India or China, because the use of animal skins was against their religions. Paper was not invented until 105 AD, in China. The process of papermaking was kept secret until 751 AD, when it was learned from Chinese prisoners. Nowdays not all books are printed on paper and sold in bookshops. There are interactive books, books on compact discs, talking books, books written by computers, electronic books and online books, as well.
