Preterit Past: In high school, I smoked (I tried it a couple of times but it just made me sick). Imperfect Past: In high school, I smoked (All the “cool” people did so I did too so I wouldn’t look like a dork). En el colegio, fumé. En el colegio, fumaba.

Both sentences are perfectly correct BUT have different connotations, so… when you go to the doctor because you have a nagging cough and you tell her: En el colegio, fumé. She’ll say: “Take some Robitussin ® and it’ll go away.” En el colegio, fumaba. She’ll say: “We need to x-ray your lungs for cancer.”

Remember BOTH Preterit Past & Imperfect Past express actions & conditions that are “completed” that are “over & done with” that “have already finished”

Uses of the Preterit Past 1. Expresses one-time, specific actions or a series of actions. Ayer yo corrí en el parque. Yo leí la novela Cien años de soledad este verano pasado. Gabriela llegó, entró en la casa, abrió la puerta, encendió la luz y todos sus amigos gritaron “¡Feliz cumpleaños!”

Uses of the Preterit Past (continued) 2. Frequently “interrupts” an imperfect past action, emotion or condition. Mientras los niños dormían y soñaban con Santa, él vino, bajó la chimenea y les dejó los regalos debajo del árbol. Llovía cuando el desconocido mató a la víctima. Cuando yo abría la puerta, la manilla se me cayó.

Uses of the Preterit Past (continued) 3. Implies the start/beginning or end of actions, emotions and conditions. Después de leer el poema romántico, Julia se puso furiosa porque su novio lo escribió para Rosa. Cuando Raúl comió las almejas en ese restaurante, se sintió enfermo. Mi papá dejó de comer dulces durante la Cuaresma.

Typical Preterit Past verbs Fui a la mezquita para rezar. Yo te dije que Laura no vino conmigo. Javier me dio los boletos. ¿ No me viste en el patio esta mañana ? A mi mamá le pedí $20 para ir al cine. Compré el regalo perfecto para Profe. By “nature” action verbs are almost always used in the Preterit Past

Uses of the Imperfect Past 1.Describes on-going, in-progress or continuous actions, emotions, and conditions. Mi familia vivía en Zaragoza cuando tenía 8 años. Cuando yo me arreglaba, mi hermana preparaba el desayuno y mi hermano menor hacía su tarea. Julia estaba furiosa porque su novio salía con su mejor amiga Rosa.

2. Describes habitual or repeated actions, emotions and conditions. Cuando era niño, yo iba a la finca de mi abuela y trabajaba durante el verano. Yo siempre jugaba con muñecas. Mis hermanos menores se acostaban a las ocho y media. Bebía leche y jugo de uvas en vez de refrescos y comía verduras o frutas con todas las comidas. Uses of the Imperfect Past (continued)

3. Expresses actions, emotions and conditions that were happening when a preterit past action interrupts. Mientras los niños dormían y soñaban con Santa, él vino, bajó la chimenea y les dejó los regalos debajo del árbol. Me sentía enfermo cuando el médico me examinó. Cuando yo abría la puerta, la manilla se me cayó.

Uses of the Imperfect Past (continued) 4. Expresses time in the past. Eran las tres de la mañana cuando regresé a casa y descubrí que mi mamá me esperaba. Cuando llegaron, eran las tres y media.

Typical Imperfect Past verbs Quería un perro. Laura estaba en la biblioteca. Eduardo tenía un 1959 Mustang. Pensaba en ser bombero. Me gustaban palomitas y mi madre me permitía comprarlas y podía comer la bolsa completa por mí mismo. Hacía mucho frío y nevaba ayer cuando salí. Sara esperaba recibir un anillo de Miguel. By “nature” emotions and conditions verbs are almost always used in the Imperfect Past
