In general, the preterite is used for actions in the past that are seen as completed, or have a definite beginning or ending. Ejemplo: Ayer, Juan habló con la estudiante. In general, the imperfect is used for actions in the past that are seen as not completed, or did not have a definite beginning or ending. Ejemplo: Juan hablaba inglés.
