El subjuntivo Subjunctive refers to a mood. It is not a tense. Tense explains a time frame (present, past, future). Mood explains the use of verb endings that allow speakers to express their attitude toward what they are saying (for example, whether it is intended as a statement of fact, of desire, of command, etc.). Some examples of mood are: indicative – tells what the speaker believes to be a known fact imperative – the command form (used to tell direct requests) infinitive – the basic dictionary form of a verb subjunctive – expresses various states of unreality such as wishes, wants, intentions and opinions

When someone hopes, wishes, or wantsthat another person does something, we use the indicative to tell what they want, hope or wish. We use the subjunctive to tell what someone wants them to do. I hope that…you are not sick Your mom wants that…you go to see the doctor It is necessary that she examine you The doctor wants that you get better Yo espero queno estés mal (enfermo) Su mamá quiereque vayas a ver la doctora Es necesario que ella te examine La doctora quiere que te mejores

Ejercicio (lo que el dentista quiere) El dentista quiere que yo (cepillarse los dientes) me cepille los dientes Two complete sentences separated by the word que subject 1 with a verb of wish, want, preference, etc que (that ) subject 2 In the second clause, we need to use the subjunctive. All criteria are met.
