Defining Relative Clause  We use defining relative clauses to give essential information about someone or something - information that we need in order to understand what or who is being referred to.Usamos las “defining relative clauses” para dar información esencia sobre alguien o algo – información que necesitamos con el fin de entender a qué o quién nos estamos refiriendo.  A defining relative clause usually comes immediately after the noun it describes. Una “defining relative clause” usualmente viene inmediatamente después de el sustantivo que describe.  We usually use a relative pronoun (e.g. who, that, which, whose and whom) to introduce a defining relative clause. Usualmente usamos un pronombre relativo (ej: who, that, which, whose and whom) para introducir una “defining relative clause”  We can also use a relative adverb (e.g. when, where and why) to introduce a defining relative clause. También podemos usar un adverbio relativo (ej: when, where and why) para introducir una “defining relative clause”  In the examples, the relative clause is in bold, and the person or thing being referred to is underlined en los ejemplos, la clausula relativa esta en negrita y la persona o cosa a la que se refiere esta subrayada : They’re the people who want to buy our house. Here are some cells which have been affected.

PERSON (Pronoun) THING (Pronoun) PLACE (Adverb) TIME (Adverb) REASON (Adverb) SUBJECT (Sujeto) who / thatwhich / that OBJECT(Objeto) who/whom/that /Ø which/that/ Ø wherewhenwhy POSSESSION (Posesión) whose If we want to give information about : A place, we use WHERE Relative pronouns and adverbs

Relative pronouns WHO WHICH WHOSE ANIMALS AND THINGS PEOPLE POSSESSION FOR PEOPLE, ANIMAL AND THINGS THAT PEOPLE, ANIMALS AND THINGS WHOM PEOPLE The people who live on the island are very friendly. We bought a house which is 200 years old. My eldest son, whose work takes him all over the world, is in Hong Kong at the moment. I was invited by the professor whom I met at the conference. The house that belongs to Julie is in London.

Relative pronouns The dish that I ordered was delicious. (which) The man that came with her has already left. (who) The doctor that I was hoping to see wasn't on duty. (whom) Los pronombres "who", "whom" y "which" suelen reemplazarse con "that" en el inglés hablado. "Whom" es muy formal y se emplea únicamente en la lengua escrita. En su lugar, es posible utilizar "who" o "that", o bien omitir el pronombre.

¿Cuándo omitir el pronombre relativo? El pronombre relativo solo puede omitirse cuando funciona como objeto de la proposición. Si el pronombre relativo es seguido por un verbo funciona como sujeto. Ejemplo: the apple which is lying on the table ( which es el pronombre relativo y is es el verbo.) Si el pronombre relativo es seguido por de otro sujeto + verbo funciona como objeto. Ejemplo: The woman (that) the man loved was living in New York. En este caso (that) es el pronombre relativo, the man es otro sujeto y loved es el verbo.

Relative adverbs WHEN WHERE TIME PLACE WHY REASON The day when we met him The place where we met him The reason why we met him
