Pronunciation Practice on diphthongs and hiatos Práctica de pronunciación Diptongos e hiatos en español Author: Victoria Reina Gil

PART 1 When vowels in Spanish are next to each other, they can be either in the same syllable (diptongos) or in separate syllables (hiatos). Vowels in Spanish are either: strong and open (fuertes / abiertas) OR weak and close (débiles / cerradas) Vocales fuertes y abiertas: a, e, o Vocales débiles y cerradas: i, u The combination of strong and weak vowels determines whether vowels are in the same or in separate syllables.

What is a diphthong? ¿Qué es un diptongo? Diphthongs are formed by a combination of: a strong vowel (a, e, o) and a weak vowel (i, u) that is not stressed; two weak vowels i a + e u o a i e + o u i u + u i

Here are some examples. Listen and repeat Here are some examples. Listen and repeat. Escucha y repite estas palabras con diptongos. reina euro bailarina veinte ciudad astronauta ei = ey Notice that letter ‘y’ at the end of this combination is pronounced like the vowel ‘i’ and therefore forms a diphthong. rey diez

Let´s practise with some more examples. Práctica de diptongos. /ai/ /au/ /ei/ /eu/ /oi/ /ia/ /ie/ /io/ /ou/ /ua/ /ue/ /uo/ bailarín autobús ley Eugenia sois historia variedad servicios estadounidense Juan bueno antiguo

Let´s practise identifying dipthongs Let´s practise identifying dipthongs. Práctica de identificación de diptongos La ley dice que todos somos iguales. i – gua - les ¿Cómo se llama la reina de España? Hoy es veinte de junio. La Unión Europea está compuesta por veintiocho países.

Let´s see if you identified them all ¿Los has identificado todos? ¿Cómo se llama la reina de España? Hoy es veinte de junio. La Unión Europea está compuesta por veintiocho países. (Note: “ea” and “aí” are not diphthongs)

What is an hiato? ¿Qué es un hiato? PART 2 What is an hiato? ¿Qué es un hiato? Hiatos are formed by vowels which are together when: The two vowels are strong ; One is strong and the other weak and stressed. a o e + a o e a í e + o ú í a + e ú o

Here are some examples Algunos ejemplos búho teatro te – a - tro poeta Rafael héroes

Let´s practise Practiquemos Write down the words you hear. Here are some images to help you. museo río países María oír pavo real

¡Atención! Words ending in a vowel “n” “s” are stressed on the “i” and “u” in hiatos don’t follow the rules of word stress in Spanish, which are: Words ending in a vowel “n” “s” are stressed on the penultimate syllable Words ending in a consonant (excluding “n” and “s”) are stressed on the last syllable. When ‘i’ and ‘u’ are in an hiato (i.e. they are stressed and next to another vowel) they don’t follow the above rules and will always have a written accent (called tilde or acento ortográfico) as in these examples: raíz baúl leído país tío búho Sofía actúa
