Why do we care about syllables?
There are set rules in Spanish for where the emphasis goes in the word based on how it is broken up in syllables and what letter it ends on.
4
Word Stress Rules: If the word ends with: a vowel, “n” or “s” the emphasis goes on the second to last syllable Examples: Toalla To/a/lla to/A/lla Necesito ne/ce/si/to ne/ce/SI/to
5
Word Stress Rules: If the word ends with: any consonant other than “n” or “s” the emphasis goes on the last syllable Examples: Escojer es/co/jer es/co/JER Feliz fe/liz fe/LIZ
6
Word Stress Rules: If a word doesn’t follow the normal rules of pronunciation an accent is added above the vowel that needs to be emphasized: Examples: Lápiz lá/piz lá/piz LÁ/piz Geografía ge/o/gra/fí/a ge/o/gra/FÍ/a
