2 Un diptongo (pagina 31) En español hay vocales fuertes (abiertas): A, E, O También en español hay vocales débiles (cerradas): I, U Un diptongo ocurre cuando una vocal fuerte es en la misma sílaba con una vocal débil: Por ejemplo: e/di/fi/cio, ne/go/cios, ciu/dad gra/cias

4 Un diptongo quebrado Sometimes a diphthong can be divided, but must be shown with an accent mark. The vowel that carries the accent has become a strong vowel; the division of syllables depends if the accented vowel is weak or strong: Dí-a Frí-a Po-li-cí-a bio-lo-gí-a Na-ción A-quí

Some words have an accent mark above the vowel (these words are irregularly stressed) The majority of words do not carry an accent mark because the word is stressed in the correct place

6 Las reglas para un acento:
If a word ends in: a vowel/n/s the stress will be on: La penúltima sílaba: llana o grave Ejemplo: Co/sa, Gra/cias, E/res, E/xa/men Words that end in any other consonant are stressed on: La última sílaba: aguda Ejemplo: us/sted, es/pa/ñol, lu/gar

Words that are stressed on the third to last syllable must have a written accent mark; regardless of what the word ends in, ej.: n/s/vocal Bo-lí-gra-fo An-ti-pá-ti-co Ma-trí-cu-la Di-ná-mi-ca Ma-te-má-ti-cas Nú-me-ro

9 Porqué usa un acento? To show an irregular stress on a pronounced word. To differentiate between two words that are spelled the same (Homonym) ej: tu tú si sí All interrogative words: Dónde Qué Quién
