Sra. Schwarz  You already know the verbs ser and estar. They mean “to be.”  Both ser and estar are irregular verbs.  The forms of these verbs follow no particular pattern, so their conjugations must be memorized. Ser y estar

Sra. Schwarz  There are certain occasions in which you will use ser, and there are other occasions when you will use estar.  Let’s review estar first! Ser y estar

Sra. Schwarz ESTAR yo estoy tú estás Ud. él está ella (“it”) nosotros estamos nosotras vosotros estáis vosotras Uds. ellos están ellas (plural “it”)

Sra. Schwarz  Use estar to tell location.  El libro está en la mesa.  The book is on the table.  Yo estoy en España.  I am in Spain.  ¿Dónde está mi bolígrafo?  Where is my pen? Estar = Location

Sra. Schwarz  Use estar for telling temporary conditions.  Penélope está ocupada.  Penelope is busy.  Guillermo y Mateo están enfermos.  Guillermo and Mateo are sick.  La tienda está cerrada.  The store is closed. Estar = Temporary Condition

Sra. Schwarz  Use estar to talk about conditions that tend to change, such as:  How a person is feeling.  Emotions.  Some weather expressions.  Where a person or thing is. Estar = Change

Sra. Schwarz  Ser is used to connect a noun or a pronoun to another noun or pronoun.  Ricardo es un hombre.  Uvas y fresas son frutas.  Óscar y yo somos estudiantes.  España es un país. Ser = To Connect
