-mente

Big Idea  Many languages have PREFIXES (which you can add to the beginning of a word to change its meaning) and SUFFIXES (which you can to the end of a word to change its meaning.) One of the most common suffixes in Spanish is –mente which is the equivalent of –ly in English.

Construction  ADJECTIVES describe nouns.  ADVERBS describe verbs.  To make an adverb, we simply add – mente to the singular feminine form of an adjective.

Demonstrative Adjectives

 Adjective: means we are going to describe nouns.  Demonstrative: means the adjective will demonstrate where the noun is.

Where are we?  In Spanish there are 3 ranges of location that we need to know: Aquí: Here Allí: There Allá: Over There

Aquí  When we talk about things that are “here,” we use the words “this and these.”  This and these have T’s  Este  Esta  Estos  Estas

Aquí Practice  This book is good.  Este libro es bueno.  This person is crazy.  Esta persona es loca.  These dogs are cute.  Estos perros son bonitos.  These pens are broken.  Estas plumas son rotas.

Allí  When we talk about things that are “there,” we use the words “that and those.”  That and those don’t have T’s  Ese  Esa  Esos  Esas

Allí Practice  That book is bad.  Ese libro es malo.  That person is big.  Esa persona es grande.  Those dogs are ugly.  Esos perros son feos.  Those pens are perfect.  Esas plumas son perfectas.

Allá  When we talk about things that are “over there,” we use the different words  Over there…  Aquel  Aquella  Aquellos  Aquellas

Allá Practice  That book (over there) is boring.  Aquel libro es aburrido.  That person (over there) is athletic.  Aquella persona es atlética.  Those dogs (over there) are fast.  Aquellos perros son rápidos.  Those pens (over there) are mine.  Aquellas plumas son mías.

Put it Together  This cat is bigger than my cat.  That dog is smarter than my dog.  This cat is smaller than that dog.  That person over there has more money.  This boy is more interesting than that girl.  This class is better than that class over there.

Demonstrative Pronouns

 Pronoun: means we are going to replace nouns.  Demonstrative: means the pronoun will demonstrate where the noun is.

Where are we?  In Spanish there are 3 ranges of location that we need to know: Aquí: Here Allí: There Allá: Over There

Aquí  If we already know what noun we’re talking about, we can replace a demonstrative adjective and noun with a demonstrative pronoun:  Este libro  éste  Esta persona  ésta  Estos libros  éstos  Estas personas  éstas

Aquí Practice  I like those books more than this one.  Me gustan esos libros más que éste.  I like that class more than this one.  Me gusta esa clase más que ésta.  I don’t want those books. I want these ones.  Yo no quiero esos libros. Quiero éstos.  I don’t know those girls. I know these ones.  Yo no conozco a esas chicas. Conozco a éstas.

Allí  If we already know what noun we’re talking about, we can replace a demonstrative adjective and noun with a demonstrative pronoun:  Ese libro  ése  Esa persona  ésa  Esos libros  ésos  Esas personas  ésas

Allí Practice  I don’t want this pop, I want that one.  No quiero este refresco. Quiero ése.  I don’t like this pen. I want that one.  No me gusta esta pluma. Quiero ésa.  I need pencils. Give me those ones.  Necesito lápices. Dame ésos.  I want skirts. Show me those ones.  Quiero faldas. Muéstrame ésas.

Allá  If we already know what noun we’re talking about, we can replace a demonstrative adjective and noun with a demonstrative pronoun:  Aquel libro  aquél  Aquella persona  aquélla  Aquellos libros  aquéllos  Aquellas personas  aquéllas

Allá Practice  This man is taller than that one over there.  Este hombre es más alto que aquél.  This movie is worse than that one over there.  Esta película es peor que aquélla.  These books are more boring than those ones over there.  Estos libros son más aburridos que aquéllos.  These apples are better than those ones over there.  Estas manzanas son mejores que aquéllas.

Preterite of ER/IR Verbs

Idea Grande  If you have a normal ER or IR verb, this is the process to conjugate it in the preterite tense. This means it happened one time in the past.  Good news – ER and IR verbs have the same endings in the preterite!

Ejemplos  Aprenderto learnaprend  Beberto drinkbeb  Comerto eatcom  Conocerto meetconoc  Dividirto dividedivid  Encenderto turn onencend  Abrirto openabr  Moverto movemov

Terminaciones  Endings  Note: conocer normally means to know, but in the preterite it means to meet someone. íimos isteisteis ióieron

Vivir VivíVivimos VivisteVivisteis VivióVivieron

Práctica  Yo / leer  Tú / encender  Él / aprender  Ella / imprimir  Nosotros / compartir  They moved  We ate  You drank  I grew  You divided

Práctica  Yo / leerleí  Tú / encenderencendiste  Él / aprenderaprendió  Ella / imprimirimprimió  Nosotros / compartircompartimos  They movedmovieron  We atecomimos  You drankbebiste  I grewcrecí  You divideddividiste

Práctica Avanzada  My mom opened the door.  We learned many preterite verbs today.  My family lived in Texas.  When did you meet your husband?

Práctica Avanzada  Mi madre abrió la puerta.  Nosotros aprendimos muchos verbos del pretérito hoy.  Mi familia vivió en Texas.  ¿Cuándo conociste a tu esposo?
