Past Participles

Big Idea  An adjective is a word that describes a noun. You’ve learned many of them as part of our vocabulary. You can create adjectives in Spanish by taking a verb and creating what is called a past participle.

Construction  To form a past participle, you drop the ending and add…  AR Verbs  ado  ER/IR Verbs  ido  Verbs like Leer  ído  Then, since the word you’re looking for is an ADJECTIVE, you can switch the O to an A, OS, or AS to match the noun you are describing.

Examples  1. Cerrar  Cerrado  La tienda está cerrada.  The store is closed.  2. Contar  Contado  Las leyendas están contadas.  The legends are __________.  3. Casarse  Casado  Ellos están ___________.  They are ________________.

Examples  1. Cerrar  Cerrado  La tienda está cerrada.  The store is closed.  2. Contar  Contado  Las leyendas están contadas.  The legends are TOLD.  3. Casarse  Casado  Ellos están CASADOS.  They are MARRIED.

Irregulares Abrir  abierto Cubrir  cubierto Hacer  hecho Decir  dicho Escribir  escrito Leer  leído Poner  puesto Ver  visto Morir  muerto Romper  roto Volver  vuelto Resolver  resvuelto

Práctica  The hero is dead.  The legends are written.  The brave young woman is seen in the movie.

Práctica  El héroe está muerto.  Las leyendas están escritas.  La joven valiente está vista en la película.

El Imperfecto

 The imperfect is one of the two PAST TENSES  The other is called the PRETERITE

Usos  We use the imperfect to talk about past actions that:  We used to do (habitual actions)  We were doing (on-going actions)  We would do (in the past)

AR Endings abaábamos abasabais abaaban

ER/IR Endings íaíamos íasíais íaían

*Cuidado*  Since the yo form and él/ella/usted form are the same in the imperfect, please make sure you say “yo” if that’s what you mean.

Irregulares  Good news!  There are only 3 irregular verbs in the entire tense!  No go verbs, no stem changers, just…

Ir (to go) ibaíbamos ibasibais ibaiban

Ser (to be) eraéramos eraserais eraeran

Ver (to see) veíaveíamos veíasveíais veíaveían

Práctica  I was singing.  We used to swim.  She was paying.  It was sunny.  They used to be friends.  You were seeing things.
