Time Expressions Using HACER Present, Preterite and Imperfect Spanish III

Using the PRESENT tense

To indicate an action which began in the past and continues in the present time

To indicate the length of time an action has been taking place

have / has been ___ing

The time expression must be a specific amount of time: # of hours, week, days, months, years

You CANNOT use time adverbs such as “yesterday” or “this morning.”

Hace + time + que + present tense verb OR Present tense verb + hace + time FORMULA

Hace dos horas que yo estudio. I HAVE BEEN STUDYING for two hours. Hace siete meses que ellos juegan al golf. They HAVE BEEN PLAYING golf for seven months.

Viajamos hace un año. We HAVE BEEN TRAVELING for one year. Ellos juegan al golf hace siete meses. They HAVE BEEN PLAYING golf for seven months.

To make this expression NEGATIVE, add “no” before the verb. Hace + time + NO + present tense of verb

Hace dos meses que yo no estudio álgebra. I HAVE NOT STUDIED algebra for two months. Hace dos años que ellas no estudian inglés. They HAVE NOT STUDIED English for two years.

No estudio frances hace tres años. I HAVE NOT STUDIED French in three years.

Using the PRETERITE tense

To indicate an action which began and ended at an earlier time OR How long ago something happened

Actions that occurred a specific amount of time ago

FORMULA Hace + time + que + preterite tense Or Preterite tense + hace + time

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que se acostó el chico? How long ago did the boy fall asleep? Hace una hora que se acostó. He fell asleep an hour ago.

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que lo viste? How long ago did you see him? Hace media hora que yo lo vi. I saw him half an hour ago.

Using the IMPERFECT tense

To express how long something had been happening until it was interrupted at a certain point in the past

To express how long you had been doing something when something else happened

Hacía + time + que + imperfect tense Had been _____ing

Hacía tres años que ella trabajaba aquí. She HAD BEEN WORKING here for three years. Hacía 20 horas que nosotros conducíamos. We HAD BEEN DRIVING for 20 hours.

Viajaba hacía muchos meses. I HAD BEEN TRAVELING for many months. Limpiaban hacía tres horas. They HAD BEEN CLEANING for three hours.

Hacía muchos meses que yo no viajaba. I HAD NOT TRAVELED in many months. ¿Cuánto tiempo hacía que esperabas? How long HAD you BEEN WAITING?
