2 Hace y el presente When used with a verb in the present tense, “hace” + “time” is the equivalent to “for/since” in English. The cat has been outside for two days. Hace dos días que el gato está afuera. The kids have been playing video games for six hours. Hace seis horas que nos niños juegan juegos de video.* Present perfect tense is not used in Spanish with for/since.

3 Hace y el pasado With the past tense (preterit or imperfect) “hace” + “time” means “time + ago” Hace dos días que saqué la gata. I put the cat out two days ago. Hace seis horas que los niños comenzaron a jugar juegos de video. The kids started playing videogames six hours ago.

4 Construcción The phrase is constructed “Hace + period of time + que +subject/verb” To ask about how long ago something happened : ¿Hace cuánto tiempo que….? “Hace + period of time” can also come after the verb: Estuvo aquí hace diez minutos. He was here 10 minutes ago.

5 ¿Cómo se dice? The book arrived three weeks ago.
Hace tres semanas que el libro llegó The book has been here for three weeks. Hace tres semanas que el libro está aquí They came to the United States 11 years ago. Hace once años que vinieron a Los Estados Unidos They have been in the USA for 11 years. Hace once años que están en Los EE. UU ¿How long have you been in the pub? Hace cuánto tiempo que estás en el pub? How long ago did you go to the pub? Hace cuánto tiempo que fuiste al pub? I haven´t seen him for a long time. Hace mucho tiempo que no lo veo I saw him a long time ago. Hace mucho tiempo que lo vi.
