El Verbo Tener Español 1 – Unit 2 Lesson 1

Tener Use the verb tener to talk about what you have.

Conjugating Tener (go verb/e-ie stem changer)  Yo tengo – I have  Tú tienes = you have  Él/ella tiene – he/she has  Usted tiene – you (fml) have)  Nosotros/ nosotras tenemos – we have  Ellos/ellas tienen – they have  Ustedes tienen – you all have

Tener  In Spanish the verb tener means to have.  Example: Yo tengo un libro. I have a book.  We use tener “to have” to say how old someone is.  Example: Carlos tiene doce años (Carlos is 12 years old – literally “Carlos has 12 years”).  The verb tener is sometimes used to express how someone feels (not to be confused with estar).

Ejemplos  Tenemos clase el lunes. We have class on Monday.  ¿Tienes una bicicleta? Do you have a bike?

Tener que  Use the formula tener + que + infinitive to express what someone has to do.  Ejemplo: Tengo que tomar apuntes. I have to take notes.

Nota gramatical  Remember, to say that something takes place on a certain day, you add the word el or los to the day of the week. Ejemplos: Ella tiene la clase de español el lunes. She has Spanish class on Monday Ellos tienen la clase de arte los sábados. They have art class on Saturdays.

Nota gramatical **The words siempre and nunca are usually placed before the verb.  Ejemplos: 1. Antonio siempre saca buenas notas. Antonio always gets good grades. 2. Rafael nunca llega a clase tarde. Rafael never arrives late to class.

Nota grammatical cont.  Mucho is usually placed after the verb. Ejemplo: Raquel estudia mucho. Raquel studies a lot.  De vez en cuando, muchas veces, and todos los días are usually placed at the beginning or end of the sentence. Ejemplo: Todos los días Jaime trabaja./ Jaime trabaja todos los días. Jaime works every day.
