3  The verb TENER, which means “to have” is an – er verb.  However, some forms of the verb are irregular.  You must memorize verbs with irregularities.

4 The Verb TENER  Here is the verb “to have” in English.

7 Other Uses of TENER  As you know, TENER is sometimes used where in English we use a form of the verb “to be” (am, are or is):

8 Other Uses of TENER  tener sed (to be thirsty)  tener hambre (to be hungry)  tener ____ años. (to be ____ years old.)

9 Other Uses of TENER  Tener que + an infinitive = to have to do something—an action  TENER is conjugated to match the subject.  The word que ALWAYS follows the conjugated form of tener.  An infinitive form of the action must ALWAYS follow que.

10 Ejemplos  Tengo hambre y sed. I am hungry and thristy.  Roberto y Marta tienen hambre. Roberto and Marta are hungry.  Mi primo tiene dieciséis años. My cousin is 16 years old.  María tiene que leer. María has to read.  Tengo que hacer ejercicio. I have to do exercise.  Juan tiene una bicicleta roja. Juan has a red bike.
