Topic: The preterit Essential ?: How do I say express things that happened in Spanish?

General information  In Spanish, there are two past tenses. We will focus only on the preterit.  This is the tense that you use to say what happened.  ¿Qué pasó?  What happened?  ¿Qué hiciste? ¿Qué hizo?  What did you do? What did (someone) do?

Forming the preterit  Like the present tense, there is a specific conjugation for each verb form.  There are two main regular patterns  One pattern for –ar verbs  Another pattern for –er/-ir verbs  Until we deal with irregulars, DO NOT MAKE ANY STEM CHANGES

-AR verbs  Yo: -é  Tú: -aste  Él/ella/Ud.: -ó  Nosotros: -amos  Ellos/ellas/Uds.: -aron  Hablar: hablé, hablaste, habló, hablamos, hablaron  What about estudiar, empezar

Spelling considerations  In the yo form in the preterit, there are some spelling issues that pop up to maintain correct pronunciation  Verbs ending in –gar in the yo form will end in – gué (jugar – jugué, NOT jugé…that would be who-HEY)  Verbs ending in –car in the yo form will end in – qué (tocar – toqué, NOT tocé…that would be toe-SAY)  Verbs ending in –zar in the yo form will end in – cé (empezar—empecé, NOT empezé…you CANNOT have zi, ze together in Spanish)

-er/-ir verbs  Yo: -í  Tú: -iste  Él/ella/Ud.: -ió (accent on the O!)  Nosotros: -imos  Ellos/ellas/Uds.: -ieron  Comer: comí, comiste, comió, comimos, comieron  Escribir: escribí, escribiste, escribió, escribimos, escribieron  What about vivir, volver?

Ir and Ser  These are irregular…and the same!  Yo fui  Tú fuiste  Él/ella/Ud. fui  Nosotros fuimos  Ellos fueron

Hacer  Yo hice  Yu hiciste  Ella hizo  Nosotros hicimos  Ellos hicieron

Reflexives  Remember that the verb part is the same…just remember to place the reflexive pronoun….BEFORE THE CONJUGATED VERB.  Yo me levanté.  Ellos se acostaron tarde.  ¿Te bañaste esta mañana?

Acabar de…  Not completely related, but if you are asked what you did, or if you are asked if you did something, you can say “I just ____”  Acabo de hacer la tarea: I just did the homework.  Bob acaba de comer: Bob just ate.
