Basic Rules of the Imperfect

The imperfect = NO definite beginning or a definite end Ud. tenía miedo de hablar en público. You were afraid to speak in public.

The imperfect = in general when an action took place Nosotros hablabamos en español. We used to speak in Spanish.

The imperfect = actions repeated habitually Almorzábamos juntos todos los días. We would eat lunch together every day.

The imperfect = background information Blancanieves vivía con su madrastra. Snow White lived with her stepmother.

The imperfect = sets the stage for another action Yo leía cuando ella me llamó. I was reading when she called me.

The imperfect = telling time Eran las siete de la noche. It was seven o’clock at night.

The imperfect = telling one’s age El muchacho tenía quince años. The boy was fifteen years old.

The imperfect = describing how things were or what things were like Era un niño muy inteligente. He was a very intelligent boy. La casa era blanca. The house was white.
