Present Progressive Nostoros hablamos en clase mucho, pero no estamos hablando ahora.

Present Progressive Definition: ◦We use the present tense to say that things are happening in the present. Today, we are going to discuss how to EMPHASIZE that those things are happening AT THIS MOMENT. ◦Yo hablo. (I talk, I am talking) ◦Yo estoy hablando. (I am talking at this moment.)

Forming the Present Progressive El verbo estar + Present Participle (gerund) Estar Estoy Estamos Estás Estáis Está Están 1. Drop: –ar, -er, ir 2. Add to stem: ◦-ar = ando ◦-er/-ir = iendo **When stem ends in a vowel  change “i” to “y” = yendo ***This does not affect –guir verbs.

Irregular Present Participles “-ir” verbs that stem-change take the stem-change in the participle as well. The stem-change will be e  i, and o  u only. Exception: Poder  pudiendo Examples: Vestirse, repetir, servir, morir ◦Siguiendo (seguir) ◦Durmiendo (dormir) ◦Sintiendo (sentir)

Ejemplos: Bail(ar)  ◦bail + ando  bailando Corr(er)  ◦corr + iendo  corriendo Le(er)  ◦le + iendo  leyendo O(ír)  ◦o + iendo  oyendo (ir)  ◦_____ + iendo  yendo

Práctica: Translate these sentences: I am walking. We are leaving. They are going. You (inf) are eating. Y’all (inf) are writing. You (for) are reading. Estoy caminando. Estamos saliendo. Ellos están yendo. Estás comiendo. Estáis escribiendo. Ud. está leyendo.
