3 Present Progressive We use the present tense to talk about an action that always or often takes place or that are happening now.

4 Present Tense Ellos comen ensaladas. They eat salads. They are eating salads.

5 Present Progressive To stress that an action is happening right now, you use the present progressive tense.

6 The Importance of Estar Because this is something that is happening NOW, in this instant, and could change at any moment, we use ESTAR.

10 Now we need to create the present participle. 1. Take the verb. 2. Drop the ending (-ar, -er, -ir) 3. Add the appropriate ending to the stem. - ar = ando - er/-ir = iendo

16 Irregular forms of the present participle. The present participle of –ir stem changing verbs will also have a stem change. You already know –ir stem changers like dormir which changes o to ue and pedir which changes e to i.

18 Irregular –ir stem changers Dormir – o to ue (in the present tense) ej. Marta duerme ocho horas. Dormir – o to u ( present participle) ej. Marta está durmiendo en su cama.

19 Irregular –ir stem changers pedir – (e to i) in the present tense Elena pide las papas fritas. Pedir (e to i) present participle Elena está pidiendo las papas fritas.

20 More irregulars In the following –er verbs, the i of iendo changes to y. creer = creyendo leer = leyendo traer = trayendo
