Gestión de la red y sistemas Un ejemplo (I) Gestión de la red y sistemas Sub-estructuras Data Center Oficina Remota Equipamiento de Red Here’s a model of today’s IT infrastructure. We call it a production infrastructure because it provides the foundation for operations of most companies. It helps deliver revenue through sales applications. It helps deliver products through manufacturing applications. It helps deliver communications through e-mail. The list goes on and on. The typical production infrastructure consists of one or more data centers; some large branches where there are remote servers and storage; some small branches that have only a router and workstations; and a network fabric that interconnects everything. For large IT infrastructures we might also have a systems management application like HP OpenView or IBM Tivoli to help simplify IT infrastructure management. Not all IT infrastructures will look like this. In reality, even if you are a small company with one server, you have an IT infrastructure, All the rest of this stuff is just a matter of scale. © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION

Nuestra solución permite NO perder el control de los activos Resolver la mayor parte de problemas IT rápida y eficazmente Complementar las herramientas de gestión con un acceso fuera de banda La gestión y operación del equipamiento IT (servidores, firewalls, routers, etc…) a través de una única interfaz Acceso remoto a todas las ubicaciones -- Why do our customers buy our products? Why are we going to generate over $400 million in revenues this year? -- There are really 4 major values that are consistent among most of our markets, products, and geographies. © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION

El concepto “Fuera de Banda” (OOB) Consola, KVM, Control de Alimentación, Consolidación e Inteligencia EN-BANDA Red de producción de la empresa © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION Concept

Concepto: Fuera de Banda (Out Of Band-OOB) Fuera de Banda o Ruta Alternativa Admin En Banda o Ruta Tradicional Dispositivo Definition of out-of-band: So the key word is out-of-band access and just to make sure to have the same terminology: in-band is the normal (productive) network connection out-of-band is any additional connection to the device, independent from the normal network, so its an alternate path or a ´backdoor´ access to the device © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION

Concepto: Fuera de Banda Fuera de Banda o Ruta Alternativa Ruta Dial-up En Banda o Ruta Tradicional Admin Dispositivo Why out-of-band is being needed: The normal network connection usually does not fail by itself, networking today has such a high level of redundancy, that it hardly fails. However the device itself may no longer respond over the normal network, because the OS is in an unstable condition (server, storage) or it has been misconfigured (router, ...). If so the only way to access and fix the problem is by accessing the device from the backdoor. If in addition the network or a part of it should fail as well, a dial-up connection could provide a complete out-of-band connectivity. So backdoor access would always be guaranteed. Having that guaranteed remote access to the device avoids lots of hassles of the administrator and helps solving issues much quicker and easier. © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION

Fuera de Banda: Seguridad Admin Encriptación de Datos Autentificación Fuerte Basada en Servidor Autorización por ACLs a nivel de puerto Filtrado por IPs Why security is so important and what makes it up: Once getting access to the backdoor of a device, security is gaining a very high importance. Every enterprise invests a lot ot make access to the IT and the data as secure as possible. That does not make sense at all, if the backdoor is not as secure as the frontdoor – just consider the situation, when you leave your home ! There are several levels of security, such as powerful encryption methods ranging from SSH v2 to IPSEC. Having all important server based authentication methods being supported is another major requirement, as otherwise the security policy in many cases would not been met any longer, or it would have to be changed – that´s risky and time consuming. The out-of-band infrastructure should not solve issues by creating new ones ! Other areas of security are authorization technologies, so that the admin will only see those devices, he has administrative rights for, so having not even the chance to attempt a connection to another device. And last not least having the possibility to exactly define, which user station is allowed to provide out-of-band access. That´s the way to avoid business risk – not only to provide a better level of availability but also to eliminate unauthorized access to the IT and the data. Dispositivo © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION

Fuera de Banda: Registro (Log) Dispositivo OOB Notificación Admin Equipo Almacenamiento Monitorización Out-of-Band is much more – its also event notification: Once having that data stored it would be a reasonable next step that the out-of-band appliance checks the stored data and creates an alert, a notification, if it recognizes a problem such as a kernel-panic. This can be by SNMP trap, SMS or eMail. By doing that, the administrator would much faster recognize issues than by waiting for the regular alarm of the NMS – which could be 10 minutes later... This allows to act earlier and so stay more safely within the agreed service level and solve issues with much less time pressure. In some cases it may even avoid payment of penalties, or even allow to recognize problems BEFORE the device fails ! Registro del Log © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION

Fuera de banda: Alimentación integrada Serie o KVM Integración Admin Dispositivo Out-of-Band is much more – its also power management and integration: There are situations, where configurational corrections can no longer solve an issue, so the affected device has to be rebooted. Being able to remotely switch power off and on again would be a big advantage then. However, imagine there are hundreds or even thousands of servers or other devices. It would be quite time consuming and troublesome to identify the correct power management UNIT and PORT on it. Valuable time could be lost and in worst case the wrong or even the redundant device might be switched off ! Even more difficult will be the situation, if having dual or triple redundant power supplies, which all have to be switched in a coordinated way. So, there is a better way to do remote power management: by integrating it into the out-of-band appliance. This way that device, which is looked at from the user station can be power cycled with a simple key stroke, completely without the time consuming and troublesome identification of PM unit and port. Regleta Inteligente © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION

Los interfaces de fuera de banda KVM (Keyboard, Video and Mouse) Alimentación Serie USB What Out-of-Band technologies exist: There are several technologies to provide out-of-band access: One is the serial (RS232) ports of the devices, which are being accessed and IP-enabled by console servers. Another method is to connect to the keyboard, video and mouse connector of a server and make it remotely available through a (KVM) switch. Power management has been already described as a way to get remote access to the power connection of IT equipment. But also service processors, like IPMI or ILO, are out-of-band connections, as they have an additional and completely independent LAN connection - independent from the operation of the server´s CPU. If you are interested I can explain more about service processors... Service Processors & Blades IPMI – ALOM - iLO – RSA – DRAC … © 2007 AVOCENT CORPORATION
