Preterite: N=Narration of a story (sequence of events) #1- Narration of events in a story –Ayer, yo me desperté a las 5, me bañé, y comí Captain Crunch. –El año pasado, yo me casé, compré una casa, y conseguí un trabajo nuevo. –Cenicienta fue al baile. –Edward y Bella se casaron y Bella dio la luz.

Preterite: O=One time completed action #2-One time completed action. –Yo fui a la tienda ayer. –Ellos llegaron a las 3. –Tú encontraste $10.00.

Preterite: I=Interruption/New action #3 – Interruption (with imperfect before it) -Yo dormía cuando oí la música. - Yo jugaba los videojuegos cuando mi madre llegó.

Preterite: S=Specific number of times/amount of time #4- Specific number of times or for a specific amount of time –La semana pasada yo fui a Target 3 veces. –Anoche, yo dormí por 9 horas.

IMPERFECT The imperfect does what? To remember what the imperfect does… Just remember DOES WHAT?

Imperfect: D=Descriptions #1 – descriptions in the past –De pequeña, Marta era muy tímida. –Cuando tenía 2 meses, yo tenía pelo rubio.

Imperfect: O=Opinions #2 – To say what people used to like/dislike etc. –De niña, me gustaban las muñecas Barbies. -No me interesaban las monedas. -Mis amigas odiaban jugar al escondite. –De pequeño, a mi hermano no le gustaban verduras.

Imperfect: E=Emotional States/Feelings #3 – emotions/feelings –Ella se sentía enojada. –Tú estabas triste. –Nosotros estábamos contentos.

Imperfect: Setting the Stage #4- Setting the stage –Ella miraba/estaba mirando la tele cuando su hermano llegó. *She was watching* - can be “miraba” or “estaba mirando” *Setting the stage* refers to the action that was going on (imperfect) when another action interrupted (preterite)

Imperfect: W=Was/were doing #5 – was/were + ing –Nosotros estábamos caminando por la playa cuando empezó a llover. “estar” in the imperfect + ando/iendo/yendo = is called “past progressive”

Imperfect: H=Habitual/Repeated Actions #6 – habitual/repeated actions –De niña yo jugaba con mis amigos en mi barrio. –De pequeña yo vivía en Puerto Rico y asistía una escuela privada.

Imperfect: A=Age #7 – talking about age –Cuando ella tenía 5 años, le encantaba ver los dibujos animados en la tele.

Imperfect: T=Telling time #8 – telling time –Eran las 3 cuando el show empezó. “ eran” is imperfect because it is talking about “time” of day. “empezó” is preterite because it is talking about when an action began.
