Nouns In Spanish Noun = person/place/thing/idea All nouns (whether they are people or not) have gender in Spanish: la muchachala mesa el muchachoel escritorio There is no rule or trick to remember what the gender of a word is in Spanish, you just have to memorize it when you study your vocabulary! 49

Adjective Agreement Whaaat? Gender?? Number??? Whaaat? Gender?? Number??? In Spanish, adjectives must agree in two ways with the noun (the person) they describe: – Gender – Number 49

Adjective Agreement “Gender” agreement means that the adjective shows whether the person/people described are male or female. Most (but not all!) adjectives show gender in the following way: -o = masculine Jorge es alto. -a = feminineRosa es alta. 49

¿Cómo es él? Él es serio. Él es alto.

¿Cómo es ella? Ella es rubia. Ella es bonita.

¿Cómo es él? Él es atlético. Él es activo. Él es alto. Él es moreno.

Adjective Agreement Some adjectives don’t have different masculine and feminine forms: intelectual inteligente If the adjective ends in –or, the feminine form ends in –ora: trabajador = hard-working (masculine) trabajadora = hard-working (feminine) ¡Ojo! 49

¿Cómo es ella? Ella es trabajadora. ¿Cómo es él? Él es trabajador.

¿Cómo es él? Él es intelectual. Él es inteligente. ¿Cómo es ella? Ella es intelectual. Ella es inteligente.

¡Ojo! Adjective Agreement “Number” agreement means that the adjective shows whether you are talking about just one person or more than one. Add “-s” to the end if it is more than one person. Soy alta. Nosotros somos altos. If the adjective ends in a consonant, add –es. Él es trabajador. Nosotros somos trabajadores. 49

¿Cómo son ellos? Ellos son simpáticos. Ellos no son antipáticos.

¿Cómo son ellos? Ellos son atléticos. Ellos son activos.

Words of Quantity or Degree: very a little pretty/quite muy un poco bastante Soy muy guapo. Soy un poco tímida. 49 Soy bastante cómico.
