Transcripción de la presentación:

ANTE TODO Reciprocal reflexives express a shared or reciprocal action between two or more people or things. In this context, the pronoun means (to) each other or (to) one another.

Only the plural forms of the reflexive pronouns (nos, os, se) are used to express reciprocal actions because the action must involve more than one person or thing. The reflexive pronoun “nos” is always used with the nosotros form of the verb. The reflexive pronoun “os” is always used with the vosotros form of the verb. The reflexive pronoun “se” is always used with the Uds. ellos, ellas form of the verb.

¡ATENCIÓN! Here is a list of common verbs that can express reciprocal actions: abrazar(se) to hug; to embrace (each other) ayudar(se) to help (each other) besar(se) to kiss (each other) encontrar(se) to meet (each other); run into (each other) saludar(se) to greet (each other) hablar(se) to speak with one another llamar(se) to call one another escribir(se) to write to one another ver(se) to see one another conocer(se) to know one another(present);met one another (preterite) querer(se) to love one another

Reciprocal actions can be expressed in any tense or mood Reciprocal actions can be expressed in any tense or mood. The following examples represent the indicative tenses and the imperative mood that we have reviewed: Ellos se besan. (presente) Ellos se besaron. (pretérito) Ellos se besaban cuando entré. (imperfecto) Bésense. (imperativo afirmativo) No se besen. (imperativo negativo)

Cuando nos vimos en la calle, nos abrazamos. When we saw each other on the street, we hugged one another. Nos ayudamos cuando usamos la computadora. We help each other when we use the computer. Ustedes se van a encontrar en el cibercafé, ¿no? You are meeting each other at the cybercafé, right? Las amigas se saludaron y se besaron. The friends greeted each other and kissed one another. Vosotros os abrazasteis al salir de la fiesta. You hugged one another upon leaving the party.

Since a reciprocal reflexive may have two meanings, ambiguity can be avoided by adding the following phrases for clarification: el uno al otro / la una a la otra (two people, mutual) unos a otros/ unas a otras (more than two, mutual) sí mismo/sí misma (himself, herself, yourself) sí mismos/sí mismas (themselves, yourselves) nosotros mismos/nosotras mismas (ourselves)

i.e. Nos ayudamos el uno al otro. We help one another. (two people, mutual) Nos ayudamos unos a otros. (more than two, mutual) We help one another. Nos ayudamos nosotros mismos. We help ourselves. (not reciprocal)
