El Imperfecto Interrupted Actions

Remember:  You use the imperfect to talk about what you used to do habitually, or repeatedly.  You also use it to describe in the past.

You also use the imperfect to tell what was happening when something else occurred. Yo hablaba por teléfono cuando mi padre llegó. Nosotros íbamos a SLO cuando empezó llover.

 1st Part = Imperfect = something was happening  2 nd Part = Preterite = something suddenly occurs that interrupts what was happening

 Yo cocinaba la cena cuando mi hermano me llamó.  Yo caminaba a la escuela cuando llamaste.

I was speaking with my friends when my teacher arrived to the class. Yo hablaba con mis amigos cuando mi maestro llegó a la clase.
