Palabras Afirmativas y negativas Realidades 2 Capítulo 1A

Affirmative and negative words In Spanish, special words are used to talk about indefinite (unknown) or negative situations. For each word that is used for an indefinite situation, there is a negative “pair” that is the opposite

Affirmative words Algo something Alguien someone Algún/Alguno(a) some Siempre always También also O…o either… or

Negative words Nada nothing Nadie no one Ningún/Ninguno(a) none, not any Nunca never Tampoco neither/either Ni… ni neither… nor

Gender and number agreement Alguno and ninguno must agree in gender and number with the noun they replace or accompany. They follow the regular rules of gender and number agreement, except for when used with a masculine singular noun. When used with a masculine singular noun, drop the –o ending and add an accent on the u algún, ningún

Using affirmative words Affirmative words have a specific place where they need to be in a sentence. After the verb Alguno Yo veo algunos. Algo Vosotros necesitáis algo. O…o Queremos o la paella o los espaguetis. Before or after the verb (if after the verb, after adverbs or direct objects too) Siempre Siempre van al cine. Van al cine siempre. También Quieres ir también. También quieres ir. Alguien/ a alguien Since alguien is a person, a personal a is used when alguien is the object of the verb. Sentences that need a personal a need the alguien after the verb, but sentences where there is no personal a have alguien before the verb. Alguien quiere pedir filete a la parilla. Vamos a servirle pollo asado a alguien.

Using negative words Negative words also have a specific place where they need to be in a sentence. In Spanish, double negatives are used when the negative word goes after the verb. After the verb Ninguno Yo no veo ningunos. Nada Vosotros no necesitáis nada. Ni…ni No queremos ni la paella ni los espaguetis. Before or after the verb Nunca Nunca van al cine. No van al cine nunca. Tampoco Tampoco quieres ir. No quieres ir tampoco. Nadie/ a nadie Since alguien is a person, a personal a is used when alguien is the object of the verb. Sentences that need a personal a need the alguien after the verb, but sentences where there is no personal a have alguien before the verb. Nadie quiere pedir filete a la parilla. No vamos a servirle pollo asado a nadie.
