¿El pretérito o el imperfecto?

Both the preterit and the imperfect are past tenses but they are used for different reasons.

The preterit tells you about a completed action or an action that started and ended at a definite time. Viajé a Costa Rica el verano pasado. Viajé a Costa Rica el verano pasado. I traveled to Costa Rica last year. I traveled to Costa Rica last year. Viví en España un año. Viví en España un año. I lived in Spain one year. I lived in Spain one year. Comieron una pizza anoche. Comieron una pizza anoche. They ate a pizza last night. They ate a pizza last night.

The imperfect can be used to say… was/were +ing or used to… Todo el mundo dormía. Todo el mundo dormía. Everybody was sleeping. Everybody was sleeping. La chica cantaba. La chica cantaba. The girl was singing. The girl was singing. Yo saltaba la cuerda todos los días. Yo saltaba la cuerda todos los días. I used to jump rope everyday. I used to jump rope everyday.
