El Pretérito The preterite is used to describe completed actions in the past. It is used to state actions that began and ended at a specific time in the past. It is often the equivalent of the English “ed”.

El Imperfecto The imperfect is used describe continuous, repeated past actions. It is used to describe things that happened over and over (habitual). It is also used for past descriptions. (APAWTALE)

Los dos tiempos Because each tense is used for very specific things, there are some key words that indicate whether you would use the imperfect or the preterite. When you see one of these words, you will usually use the tense that is associated with it.
